The latest issue of PMF had an article demonstrating how to join two frames when the desired moulding is not deep enough to accomodate the art work.
So when a customer showed up yesterday with an oil painting on 1 1/2 inch thick stretcher bars and wanted a frame that was only about 3/8 inch deep, I thought I would give this idea a try.
The piece is small-ish (maybe 10 x 15) and thickly painted on canvas. It was done in Russia in 1958 and is in good condition. The customer says re-stretching is not an option.
I pointed out that there would be a visable seam where the two mouldings meet to form the sides of the frame and he's okay with that.
One reason I was able to jump into this project with confidence is that I know I've got the world's best back up. I know there are Grumblers out there who have done this.
What is the preferred method for attaching the two frames together, screws or nails? I will need to build up the space between the edges of the painting and the frame I have added as an extender; what is the best material to use? Any tips on fitting the painting into this assemblage?
This project is not due until AFTER Christmas.
Many thanks in advance.
