I just got an email from the Portrait Society of America with some bad news about Gordon Wetmore, PSA chairman and well known portrait painter:
In our August E-News that was sent out August 17, we let you know that Gordon Wetmore, our founding board member and Chairman was in the hospital with at that time no specific diagnosis. It is with much sadness that I share with you that he has been diagnosed with a very rare condition called Prion Disease.
This disease affects about one person per million worldwide each year and there are approximately 300 cases annually in the United States. The condition is a neurodegenerative disease that has a long incubation period but once symptoms appear it progresses quickly and is untreatable.
Joe, a long time Portrait Society member, wrote to me today saying, “Gordon has this way of making you feel as though he has known you for years, he had an extraordinary a gift of being able to easily relate and communicate with people.” Indeed I would agree that Gordon is an extraordinary man. Working closely with him over the past 14 ½ years I have grown to consider him my friend and mentor. He is passionate about his art and the Portrait Society. I know that many of you have also gotten to know him well over the many years. If you would like to send a note or card to Gordon, his wife Connie and his three daughters you can mail it to:
Gordon Wetmore

We are in the process of setting up a Facebook page so that members from all over the world can post their well wishes and comments. We hope to have it up and posted by tomorrow and will send out a link to everyone.
Keep Gordon and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
