Important announcement

I am considering making a valid e-mail address mandatory for membership for the following reasons.

If you lose or forget your password the board allows you to have your password e-mail to you. This last week I've had more then a dozen request for lost passwords. You may continue to restrict others from
viewing your e-mail address if you want.

This would be accomplished by having the board e-mail the first password to the new user.

I strongly encourage all members to update their profiles and include a valid e-mail address.

If you maintain multiple user names on one e-mail address, with this new software all user id's and password are mailed to you for that e-mail address.

I can now create custom fields in the your profile account. Would anyone be interested in a line for employee, employer, interested in learning about framing, pest, so we know a bit more where the members coming from.

Another field could be business name, thoughts?

Please comments are welcome. The bloods not dry.

Framer,
I think a valid email address is a necessity and should be mandatory. In todays world the unscrupled can do damage with just a password and an email address. Any board or website that I have used that requires a password also requires a valid email address and will not allow posts until that board validates the email address.

As far as more profile info, you could have a "tell us about yourself" or "Additional Information" field, but then again if somebody wants to know about me all they have to do is ask.
Nobody has ever accused me of being shy or secretive.

Framer,

I have no problem with requiring a valid email address. In fact, I assumed it was already a requirement.

Now that there are profile fields for AIM and ICQ contact info, how 'bout fields for IRC, MSN and Yahoo messenger services? Lots of Grumblers use MSN in particular.

You seem determined to make a nearly perfect bulletin board even better. We all appreciate it!

I agree. Supplying a valid email address seems reasonable.
I've never had any problems with receiving unwanted advertising, etc. through this forum which might be a concern for some.
Any legitimate user should not object to supplying basic information.

I have long been a proponent of useing our real names ,but if not this then I agree completely that there should at least be an email address that the moderator could access. Especially when multiple screen names are used. This would insure that someone knew who was sending what to the board.
I only wish that there was a method that could be used to accurately identify a posting party no matter what screen name was used and that be required to be on file .Sorry if this is undoable but maybe those of us who are truely computer literate can make a suggestion . I think we need to be able to know who is saying what and in some way be able to TRUELY monitor them.

PS Thanks framer for all your hard work to improve a TRUELY great vechicle .

ME three.

I will miss Zorro but I agree also.

May I add that verifying email addresses after the fact would probably be a good idea before letting someone join. This could be done easily by sending a specific email to an address and asking them to return it as confirmation.

Absolutely. AS far as I can tell the only people who would object to such a requirement are folks without a valid email.

I don't mind not knowing if someone is an employee or an owner - most often we can gather that from context anyway, but I have no objection to a field for that, either.

Zorro is already registered. But a member can still hide his e-mail from general membership. I and moderators could view it.

I'm with you Framer, I have no problem with anyone having my details, in fact a link in my profile to a local Irish government business web site has all my details, please excuse my web page it's dreadful and I can't get the government body who run it to upgrade it, showing my new Logo etc.

I just love my wife- love my dog- love what we are doing to make a living and really enjoy this forum! Whatever you computer folks are doing is Ok with me----but no spam!

Go for it Framer, its sometimes interesting to know more about people on the list, so I don't mind how many extra fields you put in.

I think it's a great idea to require an email address and a name...if you are going to say it...claim it! I also like the new site...but, as someone else said...it's slower and I don't know why...it seems to take forever to move around in it.

Requiring our E-Mail addresses is fine by me, Framer. If I might offer a suggestion: Create a couple of phantom E-Mail addresses to monitor the spam. Let us know if any one is using your hard work for their gain.

Slow, I hadn't noticed. If you want all the gadgets...it takes up more space and time.

E-mail has never been a problem for me, except last Nov when badstrand hit.

Wow that homepage button really works fast!!

I like the idea of knowing who I am talking to. The more information I have the more comfortable I am with giving information.

I contribute to another forum on web site development and we get these young kids who are working on their first web page. They are rude and sometimes potty mouthed and there is no minimum requirement for posting to the forum. Only their login name is required.

I have participated less and less lately because of the traffic on that forum that is just there for some foolish reason.

I feel as many others have stated on this thread that you should post, as a minimum, name, business, position, e-mail address, and maybe a small blurb about yourself, ie., years in framing, where from, interests, etc.

This is one forum that really puts out some valuable information and it should be secured somewhat from the "walk-ins" that possibly do not have a reason to have this information.

And I think there is an air on this forum that is working in that direction. BCframer found that out when he failed to fill out anything on his profile. This is good, IMHO.

I've got no problem with addresses- it's good to know who you're talking to

Did you check out the masked message icon I put on this post. Not the one in the text but the one connected to the reply.

I have been wandering thru the archives, and it certainly would be nice to get in touch with some of the people who have delt with problems that I am facing now. Thanks for all your work, Framer.

It has been done. New users are required to register with a real email address that is verified.

Other required fields are Occupation and Location.

framer

Email addresses should be mandatory for the reason's you state and for any important notifications that may need to be sent.

If it is not too much trouble I feel the following functionality would be very helpful and direct me to this site more often:

1- Ability to select a number of "categories of interest" in the personal profile.

2- Receive an end of day email notification notifying me that someone has added something (questions, announcements, suggestions, etc.) in any of these categories.

3 - Ability to turn the daily email on or off

I've written this type of functionality, in a different life, so I know it is possible. The question is, how difficult is it to retrofit this board? Let me know if I can help with any tips.

Bill, does this requirement apply to previously registered Grumblers, from way back, or just to new ones? Just curious.

This is for new, I recommend all update their profiles.
