I recently had a project to frame a needlepoint that would be used as a firescreen. At first we planned to build a base out of moulding similar to the frame's and figure out some way to make a stand out of it. I had to go to Ikea for something, and scouted around for ideas. Lo and behold, one of their floor lamps was the perfect soultion for the firescreen stand. It even looks like an updated version of the traditional stand. I just removed the electrical parts, hacksawed it to my desired height, and mounted the frame on it with clamps I made from electric cable clips. Voilá! After these photos were taken I toned the clamps and screws with a brown marker to match the lamp base's beautiful bronze finish. The lamp cost $30. It saved the customer probably $150, and me a lot of extra work.

Nice Rick. we don't have an Ikea in Columbus. YET

Did you pick up any of those really great frames they have? :D
Nice stand. The lamp would have gone kaphut in a month anyway. Much better re-purposing.

Actually, I've had very good experience with Ikea's lighting fixtures and lamps. I've got about five of them at home, and three of their pendant fixtures over my sales counter at the shop. Our Ikea just opened a few months ago. Before that we used to go to the one in suburban Chicago. Having one close by, you don't feel as compelled to spend hours there at a time. Anyway, it is a good source for design ideas.

BTW, there is a web site devoted to IKEA Hacking", or repurposing Ikea products

I admit it....

I`M GUILTY! I scavange the neighborhood trash for this sorta stuff! Love lamp bases, great sculpture stands too.You can get all sorts of kewl "junque" from the trash...Best haul? The couple having the baaaddd devorce across the street. They were gonna have a tag sale, but it rained...SO they tossed it all.I got some great stuff there! Love this use for lamp bits. L.

Ingenius. How did you keep the frame package from sliding down the pole?
I drilled a hole in the pole and drove a screw into it, on which rests the top clamp.
;) Rick
I'm thinking the whole thing would look nice topped off by a decorative finial, but that's up to the customer now.
BTW, the customer is an owner of a local needlepoint shop that sends us some very cool business, and she says a number of her customers are working on pieces to be used as firescreens in this manner.

Very cool idea. and when the fireplace is on, it is easliy placed elsewhere in the room. About Ikea, I frequently advertise I cut mats to fit their frame... I do not fit them however. I normally get several orders to do this.

Yeah, if anyone ever wants you to fit their Ikea frame, charge for a new piece of glass too. The Ikea glass is about 1mm thick and it WILL break.
