Have found solutions to most of my computer problems here, so thought someone maybe able to help. So hee goes....
Using IE7 on a Vista computer and every time I close the window I get error messages that it has stopped working and is restarting. If i click cancel real quick it stays closed and I can proceed to shut down the computer, otherwise have to try closing IE again once the new window opens.

As suggested above, IE8 is much better/safer.

However.... I would remove and re-install any toolbars or add-ins, to get the newest versions. I know the SKYPE toolbar causes this type of behavior.

I also suggest visiting www.adobe.com to install the absolute newest free versions of Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Shockwave. These are common sources of trouble, and are frequently exploited. (as is Apple QuickTime)

A visit to www.java.com to get the newest version of Java is a good idea, too.

After all the above, I suggest a free scan with the tool at www.malwarebytes.org This will give you a second opinion for your antivirus, malware, adware, scumware status.

If you're still having the issue after all the above, it may be a good idea to remove your a/v program, reboot, and then re-install it. I have seen behavior like this before with an a/v program, which wasn't properly "letting go" of the items it was scanning.

Let us know how ya make out

If you remove the toolbars first, does IE8 have problems when you put them back on? I only use the Google and Crawler toolbars but on my home computer (XP) when I installed IE8 it was nothing but hassles and took 2 weeks to get tech support to help me uninstall and go back to IE7.
So now I'm scared of it.

IE8 is very stable, and also has a compatibility mode; if needed.

Was that a beta, or the real IE8 ?

Was it a problem with a specific older program that used it, like Quickbooks?

Installing the updated adobe products and doing a virus sweep is a good idea, in any case.

There is definitely a full moon. Yahoo is flipping out, Google's calendar is under construction, Hotmail is rejecting TW's Roadrunner email, and it's taking 60+ seconds to reload a cached webpage for me. :icon45:

Mike, if you just uncheck the Google or Yahoo toolbars, will that "disable" them? You don't have to kill them off, do you?

I've done all the diagnostics and this non-responsiveness to going to websites is so annoying! Not all, but most of them. And it's on IE and Firefox!

The google one is harmless, although it's important to put the new versions in periodically.

How did the virus sweep come out? Which a/v are you using normally? Infections are usually the reason for behavior like this.

I've been using Webroot for almost a year, with no problems until this week. I've done the Malaware, and Webroot scans every night.

A while ago, I unchecked both Google and Yahoo toolbars. Things went fine! I'll put them both back on and see what happens. I even keep all the Microsoft Updates going---except SP3---so I can't figure but it has to be one of the toolbars??

Mike, you are worth your weight in platinum!

Cathie P.S. I still think the moon has something to do with it. What's the deal with Hotmail, for Pete's sake!)

Cathie:

Do you really need both Google and Yahoo toolbars?? One is usually enough and does almost what the other one would do. Sometimes both toolbars are fighting for the same process and this may slow things down.

Keep Google and see what happens (I would uninstall both, reboot and re install the latest one from Google).
But this behavior does sound suspicious from the virus side.

Yeah, Paul, gotta agree with you there. The reason I'm keeping both at the moment is because I'm a gadgeteer. I love Google's calendar but like Yahoo's email. And haven't figured out which way to go with "public" mail. oy

But good advice: I'll keep messing around....until back into the pickle barrel, and finally settle on one?? :) or not. why do we do this to ourselves?

Mike--a question jumped out at me reading your solution steps-----in the interest of removing/reinstalling all those other aps, do you think just uninstalling skype might revert the system back to a benign status or is the salt already 'in the soup'?

That would fix it, but the issue isn't with skype itself, but with the Skype IE add-on tool. Then again, that was a few weeks ago. Hopefully Skype addressed the issue by now :)
