I'm looking for ideas to add frame trim to the exterior of a building. The size would need to be about 2' wide. This would need to look good and have little or no maintence issues. I am also considering a huge (12'x16') framed image of "starry night" on the side of the building.
My thought there is to go to a billboard company.

You want the moulding to be 24" wide?
Exterior of a building?

I might be tempted to build something up starting with a marine grade plywood (maybe crezon (sp?) paper faced, very smooth, used in architectural detailing) and then build it up with some crown moulding or something. 2 feet wide is really going to dwarf the detail though. Perhaps have an artist paint the detail?

Your question brings out the smartass in me.

First what about a finished frame look? Couple of nice crown mouldings on the top, some gilded 1 by 8s in the center strip, with some good dentition detailing along the rabbet edge. Then some really fancy estuchions on the corners, and in the middle of the sides. That way you could get a lot of detail, and be able to replicate it more cost effectively when you have to repaint, touch it up in a few years.

Now, are you gonna use Wall buddies?!

Go talk to the local police Dave.

They might give you some contacts for taggers.

stop laughing.

Show them what you're thinking of and let them get crazing doing "real art". You might be surprised.

But mural is the way to go. Taggers who can really bomb, is the cheapest. And you never know, you may end up turning some kids life around.

Wall buddies are a given. :D

Somebody did an external frame sign (was it you, Baer?) using architectural foam and fiberglass. We see a lot of architectural detail made from foam that is then stuccoed and it seems to be kwite durable with the exception of one set of pilasters that just can't seem to avoid auto bumpers.
