Well, after talking about it for months, we finally got our laptop. An IBM Thinkpad with XP Pro and Small Business 2003. (It even has a pinball game!) I love it.

I haven't used it a whole lot yet due to having to install my Compuserve software to register all the software, and of course, I need the newest version, which I have to wait for CS to mail it to me... Anyway, I've got "39" more uses of the software left, so I'm pacing myself.

The only thing I don't like is I can take discs (floppys and cds) from my pc to the laptop, I cannot take them from the laptop back to the pc. (In other words, as most of you well know, I can go from MS98 to XP Pro, but not vise versa.)

Oh well, I've either to upgrade (which all the "searches" advise against) or just get a newer pc for the shop. My main deal is being able to do my writing when I'm away, and then being able to print and compile with existing writing. I guess I could just gradually work everything from the pc to the laptop.

BUT. It's exciting!

Hi Betty

It sounds like a snazzy new machine. My laptop is a 700mhz Dell with Win98SE. I would so LOVE to have a new one, but this has been so reliable I cant justify the expense.

When you say you cant transfer floppies from XP to Win98, what exactly do you mean? You mean a document in WORD wont load on 98? If so, the solution is to go to FILE -> SAVE AS and change the format to an older version of WORD that matches what you have on the 98 MACHINE. The newer versions are downward compat, but the older versions can't speak with something that "hasnt been invented yet". Keeping both machines in the same format by using the SAVE AS on the newer machine, should get around that issue.

I hope this is helpful

Mike, I don't have an IBM think pad but your explanation for the "save as" just answered a problem I was having between my XP at work and my 98 at home. Thanks!

Also, if your avatar means you are on a cruise at this moment, put your computer down and go outside and play........now!!!!!!

There is a facility in Xp which allows you to run in compatible programs ie 95, 98 etc…….. it is in Run as…..right click the disc or floppy and go to properties it should be in there…….it is on my Dell…..and from what I can gather IBM have the same facility…..Dell have it in the “Dell Solutions”…..sorry I don’t know what IBM call there equivalent……but it is in there…

Oh another thing….I used the “Restore System” today on one of the other computers which runes on Xp Home…..one of the kids games messed it up…….it works a treat …..I just reset the computer to yesterday………and Bingo…Bob’s your uncle…..every thing was fine as of yesterday….

We leave at 3am Saturday for the cruise...

Sadly, i'll still be online from there. My (other) job requires im in contact at all times by internet, so i rent a satellite feed from the cruise line. I have to check it 3 times a day, which isn't very much of a bother. (early morning, afternoon, before bed)

It STAYS in the room

sweet.. what kind of bandwidth do you get with that?

Great news! We tried the "save as" last night and it worked great!

Then we were having trouble using any cd saved on the laptop on any other computer. The laptop has something called "DLA" which wouldn't work. My husband spent some time in the "read me" section and found how to make the cd compatable with other computers. (In his job he worked with a system that went from using AS400 equipment to e-servers. He's well experienced in using "read me"!)

I am so excited!

Betty: That's great news! It makes me wish I had a new laptop. Since I only use mine for pcAnywhere, photoshop, a web based monitoring app, programming alarm panels, programming voicemail and key phone systems, and email, I guess it can wait. It's slooooow :(

Steve: It's only 56k. They have a modem pool on the ship that ties into their high speed satellite feed. It's fairly reliable though, and I leave it connected 7 days straight 24/7 usually. This will be the 5th time using their modem service. I believe they're slowly switching the ships over to WIFI, which should be a lot faster.
