Hey folks,

I have a client with an old Japanese silk screen. It is two sided with horses on one side and Mt. Fuji on the other - two pieces of silk fabric stretched between a screen.

A painter has put a fist sized hole/rent into the Mt. Fuji side and she wants me to help her to repair it. She is not without means, so I instantly brought up sending it to a fabric conservator for repair.

She is bringing the piece in tomorrow and I would love to have someone that I can work with to get this done for her.

The piece is not valuable monetarily, but it is sentimental, and thus, priceless. Thanks for the help! :)

Another resource you may wish to check is the American Textile Museum in Lowell, Mass. They have a conservator on staff who, if cannot do the work for you, may be able to direct you to someone who can.

I cannot remember the name of the guy whom I have spoken to in the past there, but he was very helpful with some questions I had.

I have had great results from:
Victoria Blyth-Hill
Venice, CA

You folks are stars. I have the screen in the shop now. Two large holes. It is also a very large screen and I would worry to mail it, but we will let the client decide that. :)

We use two paper conservators in the Bay Area, but still don't have a reliable recommendation for paintings. Do any California framers have any experience with someone we could keep on file?

I called and spoke to Victoria last evening. I am sending her pictures of the damaged areas today. She is booked through February, but time isn't a factor, great work is, so I think my client will be pleased. Thanks for the recommendation Rob. :)

I dealt once with Thomas Portue in Pleasant Hill and was impressed. It was a small matter on a cheap overseas canvas (long story), but he did a very nice job.

Thanks Peter. I found a link here. and will give him a call for some business cards for future needs.

It's interesting how these days most of us go to the web hoping to find a web site for a business we might want to frequent. A lesson for us framers.

We use these two women for art on paper and have had satisfied customers use their services.

Anita Noennig:
Preservation & repair of works of art on paper: 510-625-1645.

Heida Schumacker:
Conservation of photographs and art on paper: 510-644-3852.

I work with Westlake Conservators - they work Nationally. They have painting restoration & cleaning, textiles, frame restoration and a paper conservator.

Their address:

West Lake Conservators, Ltd
4207 Railroad St.
PO Box 45
Mottville, NY 13119

Tell them I referred you
