I have a customer who has described something she wants to frame some art in an office. She drew me a picture so I will try to describe it.....

She has seen art that is mounted she says to glass and then the glass is floated away from the wall. There are these long protruding bolts(?) that screw through the glass which hold it all in place. She says the glass has holes drilled through it to accomodate the bolts. The bolts are approx 2 inches in diameter. I'm assuming there is some sort of panel against the wall that supports the other end of the bolts. She says the glass probably site 4 inches away from the wall.

This would have a real industrial feel to it. Any ideas? Thanks for any possible leads or input.

She's probably talking about Standoffs that are available from CRLaurence They call them the CRL Standoff Display System. They're available in several diameters and finishes up to 1.25" wide and 8" standoff. They also have some that clamp to the side of the glass so you don't have to have holes drilled. Should be what your looking for.

That is exactly what she is looking for Frank. This place never ceases to amaze me. Ask a question and there is always somebody around who has an answer. I just spent about 20 minutes looking online and since I didn't have a clue what they were called. Now I can call her tomorrow and impress her with my ability to find anything.......

Thanks again.

I'm not sure how all this goes together Jana. I emailed for information. It could quite possibly be one of those deals where I will get the supplies and let the customer take it from there. From the looks of it it might be something I don't want to dabble in. But on the other hand, it looks like they have all the materials, it could be a piece of cake.......

Thanks again Frank.

United Mfrs. also has a system that comes with 4 slotted pegs in either clear plastic or aluminum. While it is only one size, it does make the art stand off from the wall. The slot is wide enough for a one piece of glass with a mounted foam core piece. I am at home and the catalog is at work. Try the index section of the catalog under pegs. I actually have one of these on display in my store! It displays nicely but I have only sold one in five years!

You can buy Acrylic tubing in lots of different widths and cut them to the appropriate length easily (cut with hacksaw and smooth off/polish with sandpaper). Then simply bolt through them to the wall, if you use a clear tube you can fill the centre with a paint colour of your choice.
We do a similar product with two sheets of plexi and the image floated in the centre with either clear corners or simply taped to the back, if I wanted to use glass I would ask my normal vendor to drill the holes for me.
