Help Mike --

How does the chat room work? Several times I have tried to log in and nothing was going on - a blank screen - apparently there are other people there but....

What am I missing - I think I need very...and I mean very.... basic guide as to how to use a chat room....

And I always thought I could use a computer....

Thanks in advance

Hi Jeanne

Is it possible that you went in at night, or when folks aren't usually active? At night, some people stay connected but aren't actually "there" watching. There are also a pair of automated sessions/utility bots (SECURITY and FRAMEBOT)

During business hours of 9am-7pm EST, there are usually about 10-20 active grumblers in the chat room. Most stay signed on all day, and check periodically; between customers or work. It can get pretty busy at times, much like an extension of the Warped Moulding forum. Folks also come in regularly for technical help.

When you load the chat room, it first asks what screen size you use. For most folks, youll want to click the 1024x768 setting.

The next screen asks for your desired nickname, and an optional password. Enter your grumble name, and leave the password blank. Then click the CONNECT button to join the chat.

You'll see the list of current chatters on the right side, and a list of new grumble threads that can be clicked.

Chat will appear in the main window, and you can type replies at the bottom and hit SEND.

There are several optional commands in the chat room: (mostly for fun)

!weather ZIPCODE (displays current weather report for your zip code)
!seen NAME (see the last time another grumbler was on)
!stock TICKER (stock market ticker lookup)
!dict WORD (look up a word in dictionary)
!google SEARCHINFO (searches google)
!trivia (play a round of Grumble Trivia)
!horoscope SIGN
!8ball QUESTION (ask the magic 8ball a question)

It has an icon feature as well as sound effects.

Warning: It can get addictive!

Jeanne, are you sure you want to go in there? They've been trying to lure me in there for a year, and because of my addictive nature, I haven't yet dared. I'm scared I'll never get out! The G's already gotten such a hold on me (oh DUH, Valorie, how many thousand posts now??) I dare not go there! And sounds and all that go creak in the night! It's a plot!

Chat would suck me in and I'd never get out, I'd lose time and not get my framing jobs out soon enough and people would get mad at me and word will get around that I'm a Grumble Chat Addict and they'll lose respect and stop coming in and....!

I'll pick up the phone before I'll go to Chat.....I'm scared!!

But...that's just me....Mike makes it sound so -uh- comforting.:p

ACK! Have never ventured...please report back....

Val, you and I must have been separated at birth - I too am totally scared about being sucked into CHAT and never coming out!!! I am addicted enough to the Grumble as it is - oy vey - no way I would ever go near CHAT!!!

And Mike, would you PUHLEASE lose that new bug avatar of yours - I have these little flies all over my house right now and they are the exact same size as yours and they are on my monitor too!!!!! Ack!!!

ok The bug avatar is gone :)

darn I missed the bug! Is that a no Leprachaun's at Thanksgiving dinner???? Maybe I need more coffee.

Chat is addicting. It also requires you have to have a stronger sense of humor than Warped, but I will say this; I've gotten as good if not better advice and information in chat than I have from the G. Don't get me wrong the G and its archives are a font of information. But in chat I get instant 'chatification'.

If you have a weak constitution or an addictive personality you may want to keep your mouse off the chat button......muwahahahahaa. Otherwise all are welcome.

That is a "Please don't feed the trolls" avatar :)

Troll, as in "A person who intentionally posts controversial or contrary messages, with the intention of baiting users into an argumentive response". The best way to make them go away is usually to ignore them, by not "feeding them" with a response to keep it alive.

There's no particular reason why I chose that avatar at this time, I just thought it was funny.

Be very careful

I went there often when I was setting up Lifesaver for some guidance from Mike and Judy. Just finished my rehab. ;-) It is addicting. (Also fun and informative but detrimental to work flow)

OK, I was close... I thought it was "No trolls walking past a turkey in a gondola".
 Rick
(Of course, I just came back from the eye doctor's and have some weird drops in there.)

P.S. That bug thing is especially creepy right now because we've been working on eradicating a major bedbug infestation in my stepson's apartment. Talk about disgusting....

Whew! ...and I thought for a minute I was going to hear about my sad Fighting Irish again!

:o

Okay, I like the bug. I can't figure out the chat room either. All I see is some blank screen on the left which I assume is for chat and a CNN report on the right. No current user list or anything like that.

If the chat room doesn't come up, you may need to upgrade or install the free java s/w. http://www.java.com
