We can't go pick up our new Droid phones today because it's IPhone launch day and the guy is like Noooooooos! You must stay away it will be baaaaad!

Dang hippies.

hehe

It's worth the wait :) You'll have 4g, they wont!

My daughter got her new EVO 3D yesterday. All Sprint stores were closed waiting the i-phone. Wife checked many BB stores and found that Wal-Mart was $80 lower than anybody including Sam's. My EVO was $50 lower than anybody a couple months ago. The wife's Epic was $100 lower than anybody.

Man I'm drooling for that 4g too. We don't have coverage at work but we do at home. I'm trying to understand the differences between wimax and LTE now before we go make things relatively permanent for the next 2 years.

The nexus s 4g phones would cost us $30 each. That's wimax. I might switch and go for the EVO which is a little bit more. They are finally supposed to have them in stock today.

Ironically, they want $30 for the nexus phone with a 2 year continued commitment (we get credits for being 12+ year customers) but for the little belt clip holder they want $50. HAHA! Forget you. Amazon has them for 99 cents.

The major reason I like them is backup internet. We have slow DSL both at home and work. It's not up-gradable. If we switched to cable then at home we lose our cheap static IP, and at work they just hammer us so bad. To get the same speed internet and some tv channels they charge $140 per month. To get internet speeds over 20mbps they charge $340 per month! WTF!

Tethering the 4g phones should give us a faster experience at home than using 3mpbs top speed DSL.

Gotta stay with Sprint too cuz the Verizon store next door started with an extra antenna on the roof then finally just got the cable company to install high speed internet and they run their demos on wifi instead of their own network. They also have to walk out of their store to make clear calls.

LTE is the new worldwide 4g standard. Clearwire's wimax was an early 4g type service, which is slower than LTE. Sprint uses the wimax technology, but I believe a couple weeks ago they announced that they will be abandoning it in favor of of the much faster LTE. They will start rolling out their 4g/LTE in early 2012, and wimax should stay online for at least 2-3 more years.(till end life of current Sprint phones)

AT&T has about 5 markets lit with LTE, as of now.

Metropcs has LTE, but im not sure how many markets.

I believe TMobile is also working on it, but they're bleeding and will likely get bought up in the short term. AT&T wanted them, but many object to that merger.

Verizon has 142 markets lit, with 178 expected by November 17th. (about 60-70% of their customers, I believe) My market is scheduled for Nov 17, but yesterday I had a 4g signal with 29 MBits/sec in Providence.:) (They're apparently working on it and testing) The cities and states around us have had it since early 2011.

I don't think any of the current smartphones from Sprint support LTE. (they support wimax instead) Sprint's newer models in coming months will support both, or maybe just LTE. Theyre also getting people off IDEN and moving them to a push to talk variant of CDMA.

Just about any smartphone or PC card released in 2011 from Verizon (except the iphone 4S) supports 4G/LTE. This is rumored to be planned for the iPhone 5, in 2012. The iPhone 4S does, however, support AT&T's interim "3.5g" standard (HSPA+) (and 3G for other carriers) This is generally faster than 3g, but slower than wimax or 4g lte.

For DSL, 3 MB was the standard about 10+ years ago. You may want to check with the provider to see the current offerings. Some providers won't bump you up to the higher/current speed, unless you call to ask :) I bet its at least 7-20 by now.

DSL is also being replaced by FIOS (fiber) in many markets. (that's what we have in our home now, in fact DSL was never offered in our town). The cheapest FIOS internet plan is supposed to be 15/5, but it's actually set to 20. They also bring phone and HD television through on the same fiber thread.

The above is my personal opinion and understanding, regarding your questions.

Thanks for the insight!

Crazy complicated stuff, isn't it?

Basically I'm signing up for the next two years. So the choice is Sprint where I'll have wimax at home and regular 3g at work and no promise of anything better but non-capped bandwidth and a set price.

Or Verizon where I might get LTE 4g at work sometime in the next 2 years but the signal out here is so poor that the Verizon store next door can barely function and it's $30 per phone for only 2 gigs of bandwidth per month.

Maybe my choice is standard flip phones and wait another 2 years! Our phones the last 2 1/2 years were Windows Mobile phones and worked so bad we don't even use them for anything but talking.

I keep up with the industry because I'm a licensed telecommunications contractor, but YES - it's like a moving target and might give anyone a headache! :)

Sprint/Clearwire Wimax sounds like the best bet in your case, and will be around at least 3 more years until you can get LTE for sure. I don't think Sprint will see any LTE development until at least March, and that will probably be for densely concentrated markets like Dallas, NY, Boston, SF, Chicago, DC, Miami, etc.

Yup we'll be going down the wimax highway like the old fogey in the passing lane! :icon19:

Meh, not what I was expecting.

Just under 1mpbs at work with full bars of 3g. That's about what I expected.

At home 1 bar of 4g and top speed of about 1mbps, without 4g about 0.3 to 0.5 download and 0.0x upload.

Ewwwww. Sorely disappointing.

Nexus is a cool little phone though... pure android no Sprint bloatware.

Will Verizon's 4G maintain speed through the 4g hotspot devices? OR are the advertized 4g speeds a 'burst' rating that drops after 5-10 seconds of download. Can you watch a Netflix video at anything above the minimum speed?

Being in our rural area, no form of landline high speed capability will ever be brought available at our house. Thus the reason for using the WISP which premium speeds are 1.5Mdown/1.0M up @ $80/month. In town, premium dsl is advertized 7.1M with 3M actual for $40/mo

There are many who will abandon them if the Verizon 4g will maintain throughput.

Then the question is "When will 4g be extended from select areas of Spokane, WA to northern ID"?

According to the research I did before resigning with Sprint If you stream Netflix over Verizon the $80 you're paying now will feel like chump change.

Their $30 per month data plan allows 2 gigs of data per month. One movie is about 3.5 gigs. They charge 10 dollars per gig after the first 2.

If you already have Verizon, youre grandfathered for $29 per month for unlimited.

As far as I know, the 4g LTE is always the same. However, it depends how busy the local tower is congested and how fast its feed is.

LTE can technically do about 110 MB/sec, but Verizon is advertising it as 18 I think. The few times I had service (this weekend in Providence, and previously in CT and MA) I was getting 24 MB speed. (per speedtest.org app) They have it capped at lower than the capacity.

My friend in NJ, who has had it more than 6 months, said he usually gets about 34 there - on a good day. (comparable to regular residential DSL, Cable, or FIOS)

The latency is also improved from 3G. They'll be doing voice calls over this, too, to improve call quality.

Once fully deployed, this will bring a new alternative to rural areas that haven't updated their DSL/Cable infrastructure or don't have service at all.

over here in darkest essex - i get about 350 kb (yes 350 kb) broadband!!! no mobile signal at all and even the kindle i have to use the computer to download (takes an age) Thats why often i duplicate posts and quite often i cannot get forums at all !! so any of you have the same prob in the us - ause its very bad in many parts of the uk - certainly rural areas.

Sprint announced a couple days ago that this is the last month for unlimited plans, and they're not grandfathering anyone in. This applies to hotspot devices, pc cards, and tablets. (but not yet for phones)

Sprints new plans will cost $45 for 3GB, $60 for 5GB, and $90 for 10GB of 3G/4G data. Every megabyte used after your limit will cost a nickel.

Sprint will start building out their LTE 4G network in April or so of 2012. (which will take 1-2 years to complete) They will keep WIMAX up for at least 3 more years, but without any new expansion.
