Not even sure if this exists!

Customer has a pastel and wants the glass replaced with museum. Dimension: 55.25" x 87.75" WOW

Let me remind you...this is a pastel and don't believe acrylic is a candidate.

Does anyone know if this can be found?

Optium is supposed to be static resistant museum grade plexi. The expense of using that big a piece of glass is mind numbing. I find that when i am cleaning glass that big I break it when flipping it over. Just the thought of breaking a $300 peice of glass stops me from wanting to use it )

I would hate to know what a 72x120 sheet of that stuff runs. Not to mention the shipping charges. It says that the empty crate weighs in at 500lbs.

There are a few places that will cut the Optium to size for you so you don't have to buy the whole sheet...figure retail at about $200+/sf plus crating and shipping, and in your case perhaps customs fees.
Here's one that services the New England states.

Larson Juhl has 6mm (1/4") Optium acrylic in cut to size for $100US per sq.ft., rounded up to nearest 1/2 sq.ft. (Can do your size since they carry 72" 120".)

6 mil Optium that large should cost you few thousand dollars and it can be found at a number of vendors, (Don Mar, Maryland Glass and Mirror, and Turner Associates, among them). It will have no static and will filter ultraviolet. Laminated low iron glass that large is likely to be twice as expensive, far more heavy, and it will have some static. It may make more sense in public settings, since its surface coatings are more scratch-resistant.

For a project like this is there a short term rider you could get on your insurance to protect against an unexpected accident? I have heard of some crazy policies and thought this could be a safety net to protect you. Just a thought. Peace, Mike

The last time I bought a piece of Museum Optium Acrylic cut from a 6mm x 72" x 120" sheet was about two months ago. Packing and shipping it from the east coast was less than $200. I was amazed.

You guys....with your excellent prices!!! Up here in the great white north, it CO$T$ a lot: shipping, duty, etc.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm hoping to find it a little closer to home.

Could you arrange midnight swap with a grumbling framer in the Buffalo area? Not saying to buy it here and drive it over the border.... that would be a big piece of weather stripping plastic.....

HeHe!

I currently have a piece of Opium 6mm on it's way here in that is a 61x66 piece. Was about $2800. Can't wait to build this job ! Vermont Hardwoods has made a beautiful custom milled ash finish corner frame that I am going to be adding a colonial blue stain to.
