Granted it is not really a picture framing question, but it is work on paper, etc.
Hope you all don't mind.

I have several books that I would like to keep in good condition. I always try to get hardback books with good paper.
For example:

The Greatest Generation signed in various ink pens by 19 survivors of the USS Indianapolis.

Band of Brothers signed in fine point felt sharpie by 5 of the men.

A book on the WASP signed by over a dozen of their pilots

A aviation art book signed in pencil by 20+ of some of WW2's greatest, etc.

and there are more...

Is there anything I can do to protect them? They are currently in a book shelf at home.

I was thinking about using mylar to make a dust jacket cover.
Could I put the whole book in a mylar bag?

Should I use any kind of 1 ply or something between the signed pages?

Etc, etc.

Hey again. Hugh suggested boxes made of tin. I will look that up later for you. You get them on line from China I think he said. That was a paper suggestion from him this trip. But that keeps them hidden not out on your bookshelf.

Similarly LineCo makes some nice museum storage boxes.

Their boxes look good.

Tin?????? Never heard that one, but if Hugh says it it must be true..

Probably protects against attacks by geckos. ;)
I have had good luck with archival boxes from Light Impressions. Perhaps you could protect the cover using a melinex wrap similar to Jim's technique for mounting books, and maybe even make your own custom-sized slip-boxes out of rag or alpha board and linen tape.

I use scrap mylar to make jackets for my girls' library as it becomes available, usually from old print envelopes and such. But we are not talking high class library material, here. Just my favorite classics and illustrators. Sometimes I take the dust jackets off and store somewhere else, and just cover the book.

Talas also has a huge selection of archival storage boxes.

IMHO 1 ply would seem too thick to leave between pages over a period of time and i would think if you want to protect pages with signatures mylar would do the trick, and is much thinner.

Be careful of material from old print envelopes. Some of those are made with plasticizers and will discolor over time.
