I have a customer that wants a $ 50.00 bill framed
I'm going to float mount this bill but my question is how to attach or mount this to a mat board without any long term damage to it ?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Rich

mylar.

If you really want it floated, try cutting a rag board just smaller than the bill bevel it in at the back. Put the mylar on the frant and fold over on four sides. Use #889 to tape the mylar "flaps to the back of the rag, then mount the rag board to the backing mat. Gives a nice raised float look and the bill is protected.

I have framed several bills for folks by floating the bill on a piece of non-reflecting glass spaced up over a mirror backing. Specifically I used FrameSpace 1 (3/16 inch airspace) on the front piece of glass and FrameSpace 5 (3/4 inch airspace) on the second piece of glass. Both of these stack up on a piece of mirror tile (thin and inexpensive)

With permission from the customer I have attached the bill to the face of the second piece of glass with just 2 teeeeeeny drops of Nori wheat starch paste camoflaged in the bill design.

The wheat starch paste is removable with a very small amount of moisture. If you select some dark areas near the center of the bill - say 2 inches apart - you will have a real hard time seeing the paste spots. Warn your customer up front.

If the bill is old and not crisp, you may consider wrinkling the bill up some so that it has some character rather than the ho-hum of being flat.

You can see an example of this method in the FrameTek booth
(#715) in the Las Vegas WCAF show Jan 23 - 25 put on by PFM. It has received many great comments over the years. Please come by and see it. Don't touch the d%$# glass!

United has mylar and/or the equivalent. You might be able to find some and an art and/or crafts store, but I've never tried.

Good Luck! and Have Fun!

Umm, never tried this, but might work. Jacob's comment made me think, maybe just cut four slits in the backing board, cut a piece of mylar the size of the bill with "tabs" extended beyond the edges. Slide the four tabs into the slits you cut and attach on the back. Might even be able to do it with just a cut top and bottom?

Ask Monica. :D

You might try a local <strike>pneuma… </strike>, <strike>neumotoc…</strike> stamp collector supply store. They have mylar (or vinyl) stamp sleeves which come in a variety of sizes (one of which will be dollar bill size) under the name of ShowGard®.

Generally a package of several will be around ten bucks or so.

Bill's advice is good.....except go to a coin shop. Every coin shop I have been in sells the sleeves for currency. These are what currency collectors keep their colectible currency in.

Or get them on-line. http://www.jpscorner.com/ sells archival quality currency sleeves for $.50 each or 50 for $18.95.

When I frame currency, I cut a one piece sink mat the size of the sleeve, atg the sink mat to the mat, insert the curency sleeve and take the dropout from the sink mat and place it back behind the sleeve and then tape the dropout in place. The combination currency sleeve and currency is so thin that there is only the slightest bumpout when the dropout is put in place.
