hi guys,

i have to do a shadow box frame for a soft leather cloth with image of virgin mary in the middle. what's the best way to attach/fix it on foamcore? ez-attach? fabric glue?

appreciate all replies.

thanks,

I would avoid all adhesives completely and use cotton thread (or clear fishing line) the color of the leather to sew it down.

Water based glues make the leather expand and wrinkle. Once dried it might not assume the shape you desire. Solvent adhesives (contact cement, which is used by leather workers) would more than likely react with the styrene center of the foamboard. Best to use something that is not permanent and reversible if possible (sewing, tag gun, etc.). Remember that leather contracts and expands with changes in relative humidity.
Question: is the entire piece of leather going to be seen (floated), or do you have margins that could be wrapped around a mount?

hi guys,

we just tested how leather bonds to the foamcore using fabric glue . it sticks very hard, no bleeding shows thru the foamcore or to the leather cloth. what would be the potential problem in using fabric glue ?

If the entire piece of leather is going to be seen, wouldn't that be a float mount? If so, why is foam core the substrate? Seems it would be visible past the leather's margins, and therefore not very attractive.
