How so I mount a map on metal for magnets..

I would suggest to the customer that he should obtain a sheet of steel (not stainless), because steel is not a product in a framer's supply line. You would have to pay retail, mark it up and charge him for the time and effort. If he brings in the steel sheet, you could probably mount the map to it with a product like Fusion. We are framers - not magicians.

Are you framing this or just mounting? I think I'd go for the following.... I'm sure there are many other opionions though

If you are framing, you could mount to a regular rag board and include the steel (supplied by the customer, or purchased at a home store (roof flashing works pretty well and is pretty reasonable)) underneath. If you are mounting try to talk the customer into allowing you to put a mat around the map. Do the same leaving a border on each side of the map and mount to steel with a pop rivet through mount board covered with your mat...

You should be able to pick up a piece of sheet metal at the big box which magnets stick to ...

Just another wild random thought ...if he would like the ability to roll it up and isn't looking for a surface flat as they use to think the earth was ...then the vinyl board cover that draftsman use is available under the trade names of Vyco (Alvin & Co.) or Borco and use to be available in a magnetic surface. I don't believe you could easily mount on it, but it could be used utilizing a cold lamination process to encase the two together...

 ...well, I did tell you it was a wild random thought ....don't look at me that way....can I go home now?

Gee, you mean my customers aren't the only "out-there" ones.

I just rolled Frank's Adhesive on the steel with a white(finer) foam roller and let dry. The we just heat mount the map along with a satin vinyl face coat. The vinyl can be washed with acetone if need be, but is also very receptive to Dry Marker.

Gee, Baer, I thought in a sense I was one of your customers. Didn't you get 6 1/2 cents on that gallon of glue and the occassional but growing beautiful Garrett chops???

Of course to you I'm "out there", but to me I'm "here" and you are "out there".

:faintthud:

And you just demonstrated why that glue has to have "FABULOUS" added to its moniker.

Mounting

How about mounting it to a refrigator? Some thrift stores carry used ones.

Seriously though, maybe you could find a source for the material that refrigator magnets are made from and mount it to that.

What about painting the substrate with magnetic paint? I have no idea how strong that stuff is - could be that once you apply mounting tissue and the map, it won't hold anything. My next door neighber made a bulletin board out of it and it works great "naked".

I really thought we were the only ones....

Had the customer buy a piece of sheet steel at Home Depot - cut to size. Mounted the print to steel with PMA (?)

Framed behind a piece of the really thin, cheap styrene from an old Michael's frame (our standard acrylic was too thick and wouldn't let the magnets stick)

We were using the cheap make-your-own wallet-sized magent blanks. A stronger magnet (reare earth from Lee Valley) would work better.
OBVIOUSLY nothing in the package was to FACTS specs - but it works for what it was designed for and what the customer wanted.
Call if you need more info.
