When it comes to being computer savvy I am still a Grumbler in training here. I have seen for a long time that some of the people who post have animated cartoon like characters in their posts, colored text and such. How do they do that? I remember too, that someone also made a comment a while back about spell check being available, but I can't find any way to spell check right in the posting box while I'm writing. Is there some secret place to go to get these additions only a few people know about?

Hi Pat,

There's not a whole lot I know about computers, so I'll only answer the part I do know. When you are writing a post, down beneath, the two options are 'post quick reply' and 'go advanced'. If you hit 'go advanced', it takes you to where those options are available. Up above the post in that section, there's an option saying 'font', one just to the right of it for sizes, and the big A to the right of that for choosing your colors. To use one of them, just highlight the text you want it applied to, then go up and click on the option you want and hit 'enter'.

One other thing I've found is that, if you choose a size or color you want, then want to change it once you've seen it, all you have to do is go back to edit. Then go to your post and in the bracket-y part where it says something like, [size3], just go in there and change the 3 to a 5 or whatever you want. Or if it's a color, just replace the word 'red' in the brackets with green'. That's a whole lot faster than deleting the bracket part and re-choosing.

Something else you can do with some of the little cartoon guys, which are called emoticons, is that you can enter then without having to go to their menu. I like to use spinning smiley faces so much that I get teased for it sometimes. Can't help it. They just seem so friendly. On the menu, they go in as : icon :21 and there are no spaces between the word icon and the colons. If you want to use one, just write that, keeping the spaces out, and it puts in a smiley face. :icon21: Any of them that use this kind of writing to include can be used just by writing that stuff rather than going to the menu.

I hope this proves to be helpful. Have a great day!

Pat,

Scroll down and look at the quick reply box. In the upper right you'll see an abc over a check. If you use a skin, like paper1, when in the advanced posting box the abc may be only partially visible, but it still works.

When I go to quick reply there is no ABC in the upper right corner and the only icons that show when I go advanced are the non-animated ones.

Pat K:

  • Click on User CP (upper left)
  • Go to Settings and Options (left side) then click on Edit Options
  • Scroll all the way down to the Message editor Interface area, select "Enhanced Interfaced - WYSIWYG" from the drop down

Now you'll have all the advanced options that you want.

I can't remember as it has been a while, but didn't we have to download a spell-checker at one point in order to have that option?

Besides the animated smileys that are included here, you can also just copy and paste an animated smiley that you find on line.

 Thanks, that worked great. Now I feel better.
