I have a video I want to put on uTube. It is in DVD format, originally on VHS given to me by MSNBC. Subject is me, 1995 TV clip. Long story that I will share if I ever get this up online for a few people who want to see it.

When I go to Utilities-Disc Utility and create a new disc image from the DVD, what lands in the folder is unrecognizable. There has to be a way to copy a non-protected DVD to my computer and then share it.

Thanks.

The issue is that it is probably in a DVD format. First you need to convert it to something that you can upload. I am a windows guy so I can't give you any advise about doing this on a mac.

Macs have a built-in DVD player/burner which will open most of the more common video formats e.g. MPEG, AIFF, WAV, etc.

However, if the video was made professionally, chances are that a very high end format such as AVS, LCL, or dozens of others that are available to them.

Unless you are willing to sink beaucoup bucks into professional software (and, maybe hardware) converting such files into Mac/PC friendly formats (Quicktime, WMV, etc.) almost have to be done in a professional video lab.

When I received copies of our cable TV ads on DVD, I had to send them out for processing so that I could plunk them on our web site.

The guys we used were Beacon Digital Video out of New Hampshire. They did a very good job. I can’t remember what they charged us.

I made a copy of the DVD, but since my Mac couldn’t read the imbedded pro format, I wasn’t sure if it copied correctly. At first I was reluctant to let the original DVD out of my sight, but they had a FTP site to upload and download the video so I didn’t have to lose possession of the original.

Look for someone local who can do the conversion for you. Once you get a conversion, you can duplicate as many copies as you wish and distribute them freely.

Just to make sure that something is actually on your DVD, have you tried playing it on you home DVD player? Chances are that it will.

Do you have access to a PC? There are many free programs to convert this over from dvd to any format (avi, etc)

Try VLC player

on a mac, the best player (imo) is the VLC player. you can play a dvd (or any kind of video) and export it in alot of different formats. then Quicktime export should handle any conversions you will need.

lots of different ways to do it.

Good luck

You should use either (as previously suggested) handbrake or mac the ripper to rip the dvd to your computer. Or, you can load the dvd into your mac, when it appears on your desktop double click it, it'll show the contents (which should be two folders: video_ts and audio_ts).

From here, you'd need visualhub as it can convert any file type to any other file type quite easily and rather quickly too. You could take the video_ts folder, convert it to avi and then you've got something that is ready to be uploaded to youtube.

(*just google "mac the ripper', 'visualhub', etc and you should find these pretty quickly)

There are likely other methods to achieve the same end result but I hope this at least gets you stated!
