How many of you make home or office calls, and how do you charge>? Thanks, I love your advise and opinions. suz.

I'll do home/office calls a couple of times per month. I dont charge as usually they are $1000 or more and I feel its great customer service and virtually guarantees future business. I DO charge for hanging multiples and security mount, usually $15-30 per piece.

A great benefit of these calls is that I quite often generate more business by being in their home or office.

Like Mike, I usually don't charge, but will cover myself by saying there will be a charge for consultation ($60.00/hr usually gets their attention) that will be applied to the first order. I have yet to leave a home without an order.
I find that when the client realizes they are paying for your time, they will value your time. It's amazing how well organized they can be when money's on the line.
I also feel that by asking for a fee, albeit refundable, you are in a way pre-qualifying the client. The person unwilling to pay for your advice will most certainly balk at the cost of framing.

Corporate appointments may or may not lead to business. There are a lot of people running around out there selling artwork out of their houses who will jump through hoops for free. We were up against a consultant who undercut us on a corporate job where there were 12 pieces of fine art and 44 posters quoted for $12,000 including the install. Their original quote was $14,000 and the client told them they could have the job $12,000. They rolled over. I know they did not make much money but the thrill of winning the big job out from under the gallery and a possible $2000 profit is fine with them. There is always someone out there who will do what they do. Time resources are part of the job quote and consider that they may round out your slow times.

Some of the fine art dealers will sell art to anyone!

All of the posters were at least 24 X 30 doublematted and framed in NI-2505 for those who want to check the math. In addition, the artwork was included. Remember this was delivered and installed.

We make home/office calls as part of our services. In the years I've been framing, I have yet to leave a client's home/office without framing work. Most of the time if I'm in a customer's home, I can suggest other re-matting and re-framing jobs they may want to consider just by looking around their homes. I have several large corporate accounts that I know I have kept simply because I'm willing to go the extra mile for them. I explain upfront that I do NOT discount my framing and have received no objections as these decision makers know that I appreciate and want their business. I do schedule these appointments during the hours that my shop is not open. So, many times, I'm at a company around 7:00 in the morning for our meeting.

Another thing to consider with corporate accounts is that you will pick up the business of the individual employees who work in these job locations. These jobs are handed to me by employees that say, "Do whatever you think looks good with the artwork". These jobs are greatly appreciated by me and they in turn advertise for me. I do not go to a company for the sole purpose of picking up a personal job from an employee.

In our fast-paced world, service oriented businesses are appreciated by everyone. By my going to a customer's home or office, I control how long I'm actually working with the customer instead of them standing in front of my counter for hours trying to make up their mind.
I want my customers to think of me as the professional who solves their problems; not adds to their problems.
