Thanks not much good to me in Ireland I cannot see the advantage of being a member of the PPFA over here, it is to far removed from the market place and with all the new EU laws on product descriptions work descriptions a lot of the advise would not travel well.
For example I would have grave worries about using the word Preservation with respect to picture framing, I could find myself in deep water, the word I'm more comfortable with is Protection and my legal adviser is happier with it also.

That's interesting, Dermot. "Preservation" must have a meaning in your country that it does not have here.

In the USA, as you have surely noticed, we use the terms "preservation", "conservation", "museum" and "archival" interchangeably, to describe framing that helps keep a framed item in its present condition. That is, the frame is a protective package.

What kind of problems could come of using "preservation" (or the other terms, for that matter) to describe framing in your country? Are your "grave worries" about legal liability? How so?

I'm looking forward to meeting you in Atlanta, and sincerely hope you will not be disappointed with our cold beer. But if so, we can probably find another suitable libation for you.

The interpretation on the words would be that "preservation" could mean forever and a day and final ( my terminology) "protection" would mean the best standard of work currently achievable.
"Preservation" get's into a grey area over here though there are those that would argue differently, I just won't take the chance and I'm much more comfortable with "Protection", I'm also one of the few framers in Ireland who will talk about "Protection/Perseveration" and put my money where my mouth is and mean it, keep in mind that framing in Ireland is light years behind the US in some areas.
I have noticed that the big paint manufactures over hear (house paint) have dropped the word "preservation" and use the word "protection" so even these guys have some concerns.

Regarding some of the American words and the the interpretation on this side of the pond can we be really absolute that the current "perseveration" methods will preserve something in it's present condition on going, we get into the area of interpretation of words here and boy some of the court cases in Ireland alone of late would make the American court cases take a back seat. By the way I have no great difficulty with the other words it is "preservation" that could put the spanner in the works.

The legalities are based on lots of new European law's and one area that differs from the US is on warranties.
My wife works for one of the BIG US Corporate, with operations right across Europe, she has recently finished a major program with there legal people to bring there whole area of warranty interpretation up to European requirements, there are quite a few differences from the US version.
I will talk to her and try and be more specific when we meet in Atlanta.
My own lawyer who is a great guy is also happier with the word "protection" and I would not like to be the one to challenge this in court I will leave this for some of the big guy's.
What it most likely boils down to is that in Europe they are only now putting the law's together for all the European countries to harmonies to most things across the whole area. what they are doing with some regulations and laws are looking at the US and other areas of the world and trying to plug holes in what is there and some of it is getting a bit of the wall.

Not that I really need to spend any more time than I already do on framing bulletin board sites, but could someone post the URL or even a link to the Hitch Hikers? I would like to at least check it out. I am a PPFA member, and did try to find it on their site one time, but with no luck.

Dermot, isn't the problem compounded by the fact that trying to find the ideal solution to such problems is virtually impossible given the mix of histories, cultural origins, laws and social customs involved. I know the EU is doing much for the economy of Ireland at this time but I would be interested in your views of the long term benefits for Ireland. Is it worth what will be lost for the extra punts in the pocket? As a resident Brit in the US the few lingering doubts I might have about never returning home have been swept away in what I call the maw of Europe. Originally, I left England, but in my absence England is gradually moving into oblivion without giving me any distinguishable forwarding address. Sorry to be off topic a little but just how does a small business cope in such a staggeringly changeable world?

I will respond to your posting you bring up some great points about where Europe or for that matter where the World is going and where small business have there place.
Today I'm just too tired to do very much and what you bring up is to important to respond to lightly, I had two Grumblers from Michigan staying for a few days and we had a blast, the input I received with respect to this whole area of framing/small business was trashed out quite a bit, also it is a public holiday in Ireland but not in the UK my wife gets the UK holiday not the Irish one so she is working today and I'm on Kid's duty.
