Hinge cockling

Hello and thanks in advance for the help! I hope there is some advice out there for remedying a hinge mount that is cockling.
More details needed.

Generally, cockling is due to too much moisture.

What kind of material is the hinge, and what kind of adhesive/paste is used?
Is the cockling occurring where the hinge is pasted to the artwork (the art is cockling), or is the hinge portion that protudes away from the art cockling?
What is the art paper, media and mount board?

Give us a description of your complete process, it will help for offering suggestions.
Pictures can help too.

I recommend using Klucel-G for hinging. It's soluble in alcohol instead of water and, thereby, virtually eliminates this problem. I once put a hinge made of 42 gram kozo on a kleenex with no cockling. Maybe you could remove the present hinge, flatten the affected area, and start new.

More info needed for sure.

But a technique I have used if you have access
to a clamshell type mounting press is.... (and needless to say DON'T experiment on customers work)

Remove the hinges with light repeated applications of water until they release. Remove residual
starch with lightly damp towel of your choice

Heat up the mounting press on a low setting. Insert previously hinged area with thin blotter paper,
turn off heat and let sit overnight under pressure.

If the cockled item is valuable, the fix would be best left to a conservator. If you don't have the expertise to do the repair, you might do more harm than good. The work might involve removing the hinges, restoring the paper fibers to the original flat state, and then re-hinging with very low moisture. Bruce Papier's suggestion to use Klucel G with alcohol as the solvent is a very good suggestion.

If the item is replaceable, not valuable, with a medium that can withstand heat and pressure, and if it's on the right kind of paper, then maybe you can fix it. Try this only if you have nothing to lose.
