Happy new year everyone!

I hope you’ve had an awesome Christmas.

I have a Question about colour moulding. In Australia, we have very limited (or non !) access to these lovely high gloss colour mouldings. I’d really love to work with them so was wondering do you think this is something I could achieve through spray paint? I’ve done a bit of spray work but haven’t yet attempted this high gloss finish. Process I was planning on would be working with a raw (or heavily sand), few coats of primer, spray and then high gloss finish? Be great to hear your thoughts.

Many thanks 🙏🏼

I just started using a line by Rustoleum called Painter’s Touch, in spray cans. No orange peel, a wide range of colours, and customers like them. I’ve tried other brands, but always something not perfect. Hope you can find these down under.

Brilliant thanks! Unfortunately we don’t have that brand in colours 😩 I’m planning to use MTN, they seem to have good reviews and a wide acrylic range of colours.

Do you prime and use a high gloss finish spray after the paint? Does the paint give smooth coverage if open grain wood is used? I’m hoping with primer the grain would be hidden 🙏🏼

One more question, can you spray over finished ornate moulding, without sanding, if you use primer? Im thinking the primer wouldn’t grip.

I’ve sprayed over Larson’s flat Tribeca series without priming or sanding. Worked well. I’d prime over new wood, though, heavily.

Re painting over ornate: I’ve used dollar store acrylics over these, rubbing off the high spots to expose the gold. So far I’ve been happy with the results.

The only time painting hasn’t worked out is when other brands result in orange peel.

We do a lot of decorative woodworking for the Hospitality industry and frequently get requests for high gloss finishes. It's one of those things we hate doing (especially black) because high gloss finishes ensure that every imperfection and variation in the surface stands out. Double and triple check your sanded surface before painting. Make sure there is absolutely no dust or lint on the surface and be sure the area where you are applying the paint is completely dust free. Build up coats and inspect closely between them. Good Luck.
