Okay this is for all but I addressed it to Mike because he is always looking for deals for us.

http://www.buy.com/prod/toshiba-sat...um-dual-core-t2370-1/q/loc/101/207533707.html

I am looking for a laptop for the shop and for some home work.

I don't want to pay alot mostly because it is not my main computer, but will go to customers houses and for me to do some paper work at home.

Also I build websites on the side and it will be used for that occasionally.

What do you think? Typically all my computers have been Dell, so this is outside of my usual brand.

What do you all think?

I love my Toshiba Satellite. Going on 2 years now, no worries. 17" monitor still looks great. Battery still holds it's charge well. I'd buy another.

Bonus about buying the 17" widescreens, the keyboards are full with the side keypad - really handy when doing bookkeeping.

I wouldn't buy another Toshiba laptop. I think I got a lemon, but regardless...their customer support and service stinks.

The Dell Vostros are great machines. I have sold a few dozen of them.
Very well made computers.

I hate to say this, but my experience with Toshiba of late has been horrible.
One problem after another, but not even close as bad as the problems with newer HPs and their screen cracking issues : (

Toshiba used to be the best about 10 years ago.

Dell has the volume now and works out the issues better than most of the others, IMO. Tip: If you deal with the Dell small business division, you'll be dealing with USA instead of India. Granted, it is often TN and very hard for me to understand the accent - but still easier than India :)

My past 4 laptops have been Dells, including my (almost 2 year old) unit with Vista. They have been excellent.

I'll be ready for a new laptop next year, I guess. Last time, almost four years ago, I bought an IBM T-41, and it has been a very good computer for my purposes. At that time it was recommended as the best laptop on the market.

Is Dell now considered the best available or should I consider another IBM, which is now Lenovo?

my toshiba died prematurly - cmos battery problems - I hear that it was not uncomon
I have a HP 17" tank now that is way too heavy to tote around - next I will get a little mac

Hey Mike,

Went with your suggestion. Bumped up the memory for a couple bucks more and ready to go.

Thanks for the help and thanks everyone for your suggestions.

It is much appreciated.

Thanks for the followup.

I'm glad it worked out OK

EEP!! Oh great I just bought a Lil Presario Laptop...That`s an HP product...Love the thing, and was smart enough to get the 4 yr"hey this thing broke, blew up.etc...fix it free" plan......still...Just how easy is it to crack these suckers? L.:faintthud:

I have a close friend that works for HP.

She told me they are getting close to circling the drain.

She said her stock went from 21. and change to 1.71 recently.

When I told her I bought the Dell, she said, "smart move"

Vista is fantastic.

I have it on my 2 primary (personal) machines, but at the shop we still have XP

Yes - for about 19 months. One of the demo pc's at WCAF and at the last Atlanta show were running Vista, in fact (my personal laptop).

Visualization systems are not, however, because Canon has dropped support for the third party SDK to remotely control the cameras. (however, the Canon provided program controls the camera just find in Vista) For visualization systems, it's best to stick with XP unless you want to use 2 programs.

Kathleen's Vostro 1510 arrived yesterday.... Pleasantly surprised in the look and setup. We did add the 3 yr NBD warranty and that only put it a tad over $700 before sales tax. This is our first look at Vista and so far it hasn't been the least bit intimidating.

TNX Mike.

You get what you pay for. Cheap <> Value.

Type of screen, decent video chip set with dedicated memory not shared, type of CPU, memory size and speed, security features count also. Type and speed of HD, can you fix it yourself, are parts available like keyboards, weight, how long can you operate it on a charge and don't believe what they tell you.

:soapbox: I hate cheap laptops. IMHO A good one start at about $1200 these days but you can also buy a dog for the same price. Shop wisely.

Like I said before , I have sold a few dozen Dell Vostro laptops.
I was shocked when I first got them in. AWESOME BUILD QUALITY.
Seagate hard drives, Micron / Crucial RAM, fit and finish was dead on, etc.
I was expecting #### and was very very suprised.

I am used to Lenovo / IBM Thinkpads and I would not be suprised at all if my next personal laptop is not a Vostro.

Granted the batteries dont last forever and they are slightly heavy, but heck for a $499-$699 laptop!

I have an Acer laptop. I love it. I have Vista, I love it. Vista has AMAZING parental controls:)

LOL Im the parent here..... and I cringe when I open the browsing history and see that my husbands 14 year old son has been watching You P*rn, and P*rno Tube! Vista will email me if he even tries to access them (they are blocked for sure now!) Lets me know if he tries to log on on my account, what time he tried, exactly what he has looked at, and it even tells me a little about IM history... .nothing specific, but lets me know who he chatted with. not their conversation.
Vista has that built into it, Other systems you have to get the program. It is great

I love yahoo personals
Thank you YAHOO for my Husband:)

Good I thought I was the only person on Earth that LIKES Vista! Pretty idiot proof, and I like the notices(sure you want to do that ,dave?).My computer does a full self diagnostic each month, with a report, I like that too,interesting....since I NEVER do videos, gaming,or anything other than store photos, email, and internet..(like here as an ex.)and only away from home.....I don`t really need the $1200 laptop.Only differences, other than more memory, and capacity is usually the stoopid webcam...don`t need that at all ! Perfectly happy with my lil $400.00ish Compaq,NO issues at all.Besides I sprung for 4 years or repair replace, love the tech that sold it to me,Honest guy, steered me away from other models"nah that one is carp!"...and the store is less than half a mile from this spot where I sit! BTW,"goofy" reason I like Vista....neat bubbles screensaver :D L.
