I know this is a very amatuer question but I need an explanation of three matboards that appear to be the same yet with different numbers. I have Crescent rag mat museum solids 4-ply cream in 2255, 1155, and 2297 (unbuffered). What is the difference, if any, between these three mats and should I be using one over the other in any particular situation? I know this is basic, but I could sure use the help of all you masters out there that have far more experience with this than I. Thanks in advance.

Okay...first 1155 is a mounting board and not a matboard. Mounting board is usually used as a backing material or sometimes used to stretch needlework. It's very rigid.

2255 is an acid-free cotton matboard. It's 100% cotton, acid-free and lignin-free. 2297 is an unbuffered matboard. For a little info on buffered and unbuffered boards, see this link: http://www.redimat.com/articles/buffered_v_unbuffered.html

I would add to Janet's comment....

1155, 1159 and 1153 are not "sized", they are therefore soft and are not suitable for French Matting designs nor painted bevels. Inks will bleed on this surface.

2255, etc., were developed with a hard "sized" surface to allow inked mat designs.
