I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 that I bought several months ago. I now have a new CD-RW/DVD-ROM DRIVE (I recently bought this from Dell - having made the mistake of not including it in the original purchase). It arrived with no instructions - but it actually looks like it should just slip into the slot where the original drive is. Does anyone know how I remove the original and does the new one just slide in? Couldn't possibly be that easy?

If you're replacing an existing drive:

</font>
  1. Remove the cover (sometimes this is the hardest part - each one is unique) </font>
  2. Disconnect the power cable, the data cable and, probably, a sound cable from the existing drive </font>
  3. Remove screws (probably 4) that secure the existing drive in the bay channels and slide the drive out </font>
  4. Slide the new drive in the bay and reconnect the cables you disconnected from the other drive </font>
  5. Secure the new drive using the screws you removed from the old one </font>
  6. Replace the cover and pray </font>
  7. Depending on your operating system, you may need to install software drivers. This may require your original Windows installation CDs or software from the CD vendor </font>
If all goes well, it should take as long to do this as it takes to read this. If all doesn't go well, the Grumbler I'd want in my court would be JVandy57.

I just read the rest of the topic title and realize you're talking about a laptop, not a desktop. That's a whole different enchilada and maybe as simple as you suggest.

Sorry. Jerry?

W. Bates,
I have a Dell Inspiron. On the bottom of the notebook should be a release, a slide botton with an arrow pointing in the direction you need to slide it. Push the button in the direction of the arrow. The drive in the notebook should pop loose. Pull it out and slide in the new drive. (it's that easy) Becareful to first have the notebook off. Secondly there is also a release for your hard drive, make sure you are pushing the correct one.
You may need to configure the new drive depending on the operating system of your notebook.

Correction...
I just tried my Inspiron 4000. You have to slide and hold the button while pushing the drive out. There is a small finger groove on the bottom of the drive near the front you use to push the drive out of the case.

Any problems let me know.
