This is my first trip to Atlanta. I will be traveling alone. I have a few questions about things in Atlanta.

I am planning on staying with someone I know in Conyers. It is about 45 minutes from downtown. I may rent a car, but this does present some other questions. What does parking cost? Is it convenient? I have heard that it is not safe to walk alone in the downtown area at all. Is this true. I am female and would be going to my car alone after the dinner at Pitty Pats on Saturday night. Would it be just better (easier) to get a low cost motel and chuck the car rental idea.

If I were to get a motel, how difficult would it be to get to the convention center?

Anything other information that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yessssss! Another nervous newbie!

The people here have answered all of my questions as I am sure they will for you. After my earlier "freak out" I am feeling much more relaxed and am now excited, not scared about Atlanta. I have several people who are willing to hunt for me when I get lost. LOL

I am almost packed!!!!

I have stayed in Atlanta alone. The year I did this, I stayed at the Days Inn (clean and reasonable) and walked to the convention. It is not real close, but very walk-able. I can't tell you about the car thing, I've always stayed close by, BUT I would be willing to bet someone would walk you to your car after the dinner. We all look out for one another.

1. Don't think you will find any "cheap" places to stay close to the show. They have excellent rates right now: $99.00/night at the Westin, but by no means cheap.
2. Shuttle transport is provided to and from the show at most of the major hotels.
3. Check out the MARTA (Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) routes to see if they are convenient to Conyers. There is a station at Peachtree center, directly under the Westin, which is just accross from Pitty-Pats. There is also a station just behind the Phillips Center, accross from the World Congress Center. I find MARTA safe and convenient, though I can't look at it as a woman traveling alone.
4. Parking in Atlanta is difficult at best and expensive under any conditions. You may still end up with a hike and returning to an ill-lit parking garage after the show and subsequent get togethers. I used to drive to the shows, but found the car a liability in Atlanta. Even though it is only about a 6 hour drive, I choose to fly and take advantage of the excellent mass transit system while there.

To check in to room availability call Ambassador Services Group at 800-243-1195.

Thanks for the information so far.

Renting the car is out (car rental and parking = one night at the Sheraton, $79.00, good price). I will be with Friends Thursday night and move into the Sheraton on Friday. It is only 7 blocks and has a shuttle service. I was surprised to get a room that reasonable.

Any other tips you can pass along to make things easier for this trip would be greatly appreciated.

For all out there who are nervous...it shall be my first time also. Go to BArnes and Noble or your big local book store and get Atlanta Popout Map. It is $5.95 and well worth it, I live just outside of dc...if it wasn't for this thing I would never get around. It might also help to know where folks are talking about staying. I wish I would have got it earlier. The map is about 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches and folds out to show all the streets and attractions in the area.

I will be there Friday morning and hope to meet up with everyone during the day. So I can get to Pitty Patty's and the Omni. The Omni and other hotels are on the map too. But no Patty.

dns,

Posting the same thing over again in the form of a "quote" will get old very quickly with the rest of us. We read and understood your original post and, unless you wanted to expound on that post with some additional helpful information, I would leave it at one post per set of sentences.

Thanks.

I just went out and got my map. This is sooooo cool!!! You are right though, Aunt Pitty Pat's is not on this map. I am sure we can find it if we ask at our hotels.

I am feeling less and less unsure of myself as the days go buy. Thanks for all your help. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Anyone else staying at the Sherton?

i know it is not as easy as the map seems to be, but they help a bunch. take your time and it will be fine. this thing has been in my pocket for two years (the dc version). i have three, one in my truck, one at home, and one on me. that might be overkill, but i can get lost pretty good.

see you there.
