I have a client who travels extensively. He wants me to mount a huge world map, (32x50) onto burlap, attach the burlap to a bulletin board with 3" fabric showing around the map (he has burned the edges of the map) and framed. He wants to be able to put push pins into the places he visits, so there will be no glass. HOW DO I MOUNT PAPER TO FABRIC? and keep it straight and wrinkle free? Would it be better to just to mount it on a tweedy type of fabric mat? or would the moisture in the air cause the matboard to eventually get wavy?

Just thinking out loud, but why not mount the burlap fabric as a border just wide enough to come under the burnt edge of the map on 1/2" foam core and then use either 3M Sprayment or 3M 77 Spray Adhesive. This is presuming the map is on thick enough paper that you could use a spray adhesive. Of course this would not be archival and the spray adhesive would eventually discolor the map...or should I say "burn" the rest of the map, but it would be many years down the line.

The spray would adhere the burnt edges to the fabric.

As long as he's putting pins in and leaving them alone the fom-bord would serve as a bulleting board.

If he doesn't mind that the map is not perfectly flat, you could adhere the entire map to burlap without any problems with the spray adhesive. I had a friend adhere canvas backed carpet to the inside sides of his van back in the 60's with 77 spray.

As much as I hate sprays, this might be an appropriate application.

Just let him know that this isn't something he'd pass on to his grandchildren.

Map on burlap

Dave, thank you for your input. I thought about the same thing, but the paper isn't very thick and the edges are very jagged due to the burning. I am afraid that the edge of the burlap will show through the paper.

I am sorry, I do not know what Fusion 4K is and I couldn't find anything when I googled it. Please describe it to me.
Thank you.

check into the availability of 40/60 perfect mount---pre sticky and that stuff HOLDS(be very very VERY careful when you put image down---you get 1 chance to get it right!!!!!!!! glue is good enough to hold the burlap w/o extra goo, but should be pressed down under pressure(1-2 boxes of glass etc) for a couple of days to ensure grip over the entire area

I would mount the fabric first to foamcore (using the drymount tissue or spray adhesive), then mount the map to that using a spray adhesive or drymount tissue probably a spray adhesive would work best with the edges. That way you are sure that the fabric wont wrinkle on you. you could mount the map to another piece of thin foamcore, cut slightly smaller than the map, so the burlap does not show through if that is a concern. Just an idea.

Look at the choices available in a burlap finish from you fabric supplier; we probably would not use burlap because of the small pieces of burlap that would be hard to control. A lookslike would be a better choice. You could mount the burlap fabric on a piece of sealed plywood with spraymount. If you client wants to use pins to mark places on the map they would really stay in place on plywood.

To keep the burlap from deforming the map, you might consider mounting the map in the center of a sheet of board and then applying the burlap around its
edges. This can be done by mouning the burlap on paper and cutting the backed burlap into strips and mounting those around the map. This is how silk brocade is added to Asian screens and scrolls.
