Heavy Mirror Question

I had someone bring in a rather heavy, framed mirror that looked as if it had been originally been attached to some piece of furniture. The moulding is a style that angles forward, leaving a gap between the frame and the wall. Then, there is a particle board type thing stapled all around the back of the frame covering the mirror.

Attached to the frame are 2 wooden blocks that presumably were where it fit to the furniture. I was asked to simply attach a heavy duty enough wire for hanging, which I did. Zbars etc were not an option as there was nothing to attach them to.

This person now has had the mirror hung and is unhappy because it is sticking out 2" from the wall.
Any suggestions for how to securely hang this thing? Im not comfortable unscrewing and hammering the blocks off as I am not confident in the frame joins.
Oh, and did I mention they want to hang it over a bed...which I strongly advised them not to. Sigh. I'm headed to their house tomorrow and I think reframing is going to be my first suggestion.

sorry for the long question

Is this thing safe enough to hang from a wire??

I refuse to put wires on the backs of many mirrors because of that reason (especially those that have a huge sticker on that back saying: Do Not Use a Wire)!

We are not wizards and If you cannot attach a Zbar to hang it safely and flat, then there was a good reason it was part of the furniture and was not supposed to be hung on a wall!

Oh and over a bed?? Fuggedabouttit!

Was originally told the wire was for support...on the furniture. Then found out now they have hung it over the bed.

I would tell them re frame it or wash your hands of it.

You can't reason people out of stupid. If they want a heavy unsecured mirror over their bed that is their problem. If you help them hang it you will be on the hook should anything happen.

If it is not your frame don't expose yourself to possible issues down the road.

Your tagged - The last person to touch a project like that is asking for trouble, a law suit, or worse. Its a no win proposition.

I agree.... pass on that job.

Go with your wire snips and their cash refund. Take the mirror down and cut off the wire without even asking, and give them their money back. State in no uncertain terms that you would have not installed that wire if they told you they were going to hang it over the bed.

How about using some 3 hole "D' hangers in the back of the frame (perhaps on those blocks with screws into frame ) and then they can hang on wall anchors from those "D" rings. Better than wire and what you see often installed from the factory on mirrors.

The heavy duty d-rings sound like a winner. and by attaching to the blocks will help it hang flatter.

It's on the wall over the bed, not on the ceiling, right? Either way, yuck! I don't want to look up and see someone looking at me, or see my reflection in the mirror on the wall behind me! Yuck, some sights are better left to the imagination.....

A mirror getting dressed is one thing, a mirror for getting dirty in front of is, just dirty.....

Is the frame solid wood or particle board? It was made to sit on furniture, not hang. So the frame may not be sturdy enough for the stress.

Frame is solid wood. Particle board just covers the back

LMAO!

I'm not normally pre-judgmental about peoples predilections for getting their kicks BUT putting a potentially dangerous heavy(& breakable) object over one's bed in the hopes of stimulating one's libido/ego is just plain STUPID!!!!!!! (and suicidal!!!) .

new/adequate to the job frame, proper anchoring, &/or use some "cheap" plastic mirror instead, or walk away with your conscience intact.

Just remember....

that an individual who is only an architect(with a degree) will come in contact with reality when a structural engineer reviews their design plans.
