MGF, Master Grumble Framer
This was a design that stemmed from a good idea that cultivated into several ideas meshed into one.
A guy I went to high school with earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in Hapkido in Cambodia.
He wanted a very basic shadowbox done. I told him, that I had some cool ideas, and he said to run with them. And this is what I ended up with.
The background is an actual Hapkido uniform. Around it's edge is a black mat with a reverse bevel to hide the core. Then there is a Frank's Fabrics Liner (Profile (FE-P) hand wrapped in a Chinese Red linen. The bamboo looking moulding is from Williamson Co. and is actually turned on its side and chopped so that it's angle draws the eye into the center. Then a hand made poplar case surrounds the entire package to hold it all together. For the poplar case, I built it, painted it red, then painted it black twice. Then I took it out to the driveway and threw it down the driveway. Distressing "a la Dave" . I took a chisel and beat it up, and scratched it where it would look like it would have been dinged and scracthed over time. Then I put a couple coats of satin poly on it, and wrapped it all up. Because of the budget, no museum glass went into it. Kind of a shame, but oh well. It still looks sharp.
Man this #### has a tiny waist!
All in all, the dimensions of the package on the outside are 43" X 31".
Here's a question, what would YOU have charged for this? I'm curious. I won't put how many hours of labor went into it, because each framer is different in how long they work on something like this.
Special thanks to Baer for some ideas with the design and material selection.
enjoy.
