I have a small project where the customer wants to mount a piece of plexiglass over a map, without a frame. They want to update the map on a repeated basis by marking/erasing with a grease pencil.

So, what is the best method to:
1) Sandwich the two pieces together (mirror clamps?)
2) To hang it (rivet a piece of z-bar at the top?)

For this sort of thing we usually use male/female nylon screw sets to unite front and back (one in each corner); and then an acrylic keyhole hanger on the back for small items, or an acrylic cleat for larger ones. For larger ones (if their budget allows) we'll use brushed silver standoffs instead, and sometimes substitute tempered glass for acrylic. Frankly, we try to avoid this sort of order, preferring to sell frames! But sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do!

The bad news.

The edges of acrylic cut on your wall cutter will not be suitable for framing as they are very rough. Even acrylic cut on a table saw with a good plastic blade will seldom look as good as you need.

The good news

Acrylic cut with a good plastic blade on a table saw (not on your wall cutter), can be wet sanded (300 through 2400 grit depending on how good or bad -you will need to experiment - the edge is) and polished with a bench polisher and polishing compound or flame polished. Google "how to edge polish plexiglass (or acrylic)" or something similar for more info. There are many articles and videos out there.

I used to do this. Used to; as in the sense that it is too much effort for too little money.

I don't understand why having a minimal frame such as a Nielsen #11 would prevent the desired usage you described. If you quote a realistic (read: fair to you) price for doing what would be necessary to make the no-frame look acceptable, it will become apparent that the frame is the cost-effective choice.
