hanging hardware

Are these metal or wood frames?

I really like WallBuddies for such an installation. The frames will hang straight and close to the wall. Simple to use, especially for wood frames.

I'm getting ready to do an installation and am probably going to use the Magic Marker hangers from Picture Perfect. This installation requires security hangers and I'm not so sure WallBuddies would work as well in this case.

I don't like WallBuddies in public places because they are so easily knocked off the wall - wish they would supply a hanger and nail designed so a little upwards bump wouldn't knock the frame off the wall.

Bandsaw... you must go to some wilder parties than I do. :D

I've never encountered this problem.

what type of material are you using? Check out the hangers at Craft Inc. They are Made in the USA

Dave, our sample WallBuddies frame was knocked off the wall in the store front daily until we relocated it. It was by the cash counter and when they stood up from signing their Visa if their shoulder just bumped it a little it fell. I thought they were a good idea for doctors waiting rooms etc but no more - too many complaints.

The hanger needs to be designed so it takes a double movement to release it. Now just a 1/4 inch lift and it can fall. Wouldn't be hard to redesign it so you would have to pull the bottom of the frame away from the wall before lifting it off the nails. If you lift straight up it wouldn't lift and be held by the nails.

I like the idea of WallBuddies and so do some customers but many don't because it's difficult to move frames around your home unless the frames are all the same width.

I agree that that is a detriment.

Beehive Hangers are great. Herb will send you a sample to try out. Do a search of the commercial section for contact info. Very inexpensive.

I also vote Beehive Hangers!

They rule ... we are quite addicted.

You could always use security hangers, but I vote for wall buddies. So much easier. Just use the security hangers above the exam table, and down low near play areas, anywhere that would get bumped. Whether a space is public or private doesn't matter. It matters if the art is hung someplace where it would get knocked down.

There is a GREAT class on Sunday at the West Coast Art and Frame show that will demonstrate a variety of hanging systems and also show some nifty installation tools and techniques. The last time it was taught, there were some free samples as well.

One way to improve on Wall Buddies is to use a screw and washer and spacer to hold them. That gives a larger surface area for the piece to sit on. You can also add a security bracket to the bottom, but if you are going to do that, why not just use the best/easiest system and use a "t lock" system like the ones made by AMS?

I agree that the metal system from Frame Tek is the best on the market.

Wood Secure T Hangers, art in public places should be locked on the wall.

Beehive hangers are for wood and eliminate the need to position them perfectly. Check them out and you will see how easy it will be to hang groupings straight and level.

For aluminu sectional frames, FrameSecure hangers by FrameTek are absolutely the best.

For wood or plastic frames, I prefer to use a pair of 1/2" x 2" mending plates on each frame. Cheap, easy, precise, secure, out-of-sight, and no special tools needed. Paul Frederick described this method in one of his books; I think it was "More Answers For The Framer".

I hang hundreds of frames each year.

The reason to use WallBuddies at the top rather than the Secure-T hardware is the simplicity of leveling as well as the versatility and strength the WallBuddie brackets on a wood frame. Many clients however refuse the third hole in the wall for a Secure T at the bottom leaving the frame on WallBuddies vulnerable to being dislodged.

I often Use the Secure T top hangers without the T.

I would be pleased if AMS would produce a few variations of the T screw. The one they make is big. I would like a thinner one with finer threads. And perhaps a surface mount T in a mounting plate. There is often a reluctance by the client in the third hole in the wall especially when it's so big.

For example I installed 100 frames in the city hall chambers using Secure T as specified. The walls are rather expensive hardwood. I can use a #6 screw to mount the top brackets which is more than strong enough and leaves a small hole to be filled if there is a change but there is only one size T screw which is about a #10 - complete overkill in hardwood leaving a big hole.

I used the Framtek mounts for aluminium for a restaurant job and they worked well but I don't like the wall anchors. These types of expanding wall anchors work OK in a clean piece of drywall but when you hit a joint in drywall that's mostly filler and no board it's crumble time. On a big job you need a big variety of wall anchors and a big bag of tricks to get them all up. One of the advantages of the Framtek hanger is that you can easily reposition the hanger and try again.

For the Frametek hangers I made a little sheet metal wrench that fits around the anchor between the frame and the wall to turn them - makes it a little easier.

For the Secure T I made a little plastic sheet with a slot to protect the wall from the wrench.

With Secure T I attach the bottom bracket to the frame with only 1 screw before hanging. Then if there's a little misalignment of the T screw I can swing the bottom bracket a bit until the screw fits in then put the last screw into the frame.

Hook-Ups

I really like hook-ups they have 3 different types 2 security 1 not security but all three work well and I have used then on numerous occasions. We have done 2 large installs with them and they are very simple, I have used the standard sec. hangers and I like hook ups so much more I provide a link.

These are also adjustable if you are a little off of level.

I think I may go with security hangers here, but wall buddies with WASHERS are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also received the new beehive hangers and I have been very impressed. Going to for sure add them to my options.

Do you have a diagram to explain this, Rob? I'm not exactly sure I understand how it works.

Herb sent me a couple of samples of the Bee Hive Hangers and I will be switching from the Wall Buddies to Bee Hive as soon as I run out of my supply of Wall Buddies. To me the Bee Hive Hanger just feels more secure on the wall and a lot easier to use.
