Will Gatorboard hold a small screw, like the sort of 3/8" screw used for 2 hole superhangers? I'm thinking of fabricating a french cleat for an artist who wants her pieces (mounted to gator) to hang as flat to the wall as possible.

Thanks!

I've put a screw in it before. :D
How heavy is the artwork?
I would use some glue in the screw hole too.............

that's would be the Buckeye method;) , what about Kwik hangers? French cleat would be better!

I'd use a screw washer.

Oh My that sounded rude, sorry Erin! I'd use one of those finish washers for crews, you know the brass cup things that help disperse the pressure from the screw. Will help it from pulling through. I use them all the time when drilling and screwing through plexi.

Get your mind out of the gutter Bob, you need some good conservative family values ;)

I don't think screwing will hold very well, it will if lightly handled and I've done it myself, but only in a pinch.

All right, then what about a t-nut through a smaller gator board with artwork mounted to another gator board? That way no t-nut poking through the paper of the artwork and with a smaller gator board underneath it'll look like it is floating, ever so slightly. And the t-nut will give better purchase to the cleat. Or even a z-bar as that would be skinnier than a cleat, and just as sturdy.

....or, you could glue a 2" wide strip of 1/4" plywood the length of the back of the gatorboard using something like the glue used for formica. This way the glue surface is wide enough to not separate from the gatorboard. Then you could use screws into that for your hangers.

You could also just glue one side of the pinch cleat the same way.
The shear load on the glue would be spread out enough to not fail from the weight of the gatorboard which wouldn't be much anyhow. You would also need to glue another small strip near the bottom so it would hang straight.

Or you could wave your Yew and Hickory wand, you know the one with the Unicorn hair core. That has just enough oomph to it to hold the piece in place!

Back on point boys. They make screws for going into drywall that have huge threads. These would definitely hold in the gator. Try a good hardware store not one of the big boxes but the type where you can buy 1 screw if you need to.

We have used wall buddies on 1/2 inch gator board many times. We put a dab of silly cone on the wall buddies for extra insurance.

weight on srt=unknown & I really dont think just using screws into the gator cover board will hold up in the long run(it's ONLY cardboard, yes?) . that being said, screw/"largish' washer combo would be good for the art side but they would BOTH stick out a little into the art 'area'. so wood French cleat(at least 1" wide?) & liquid nails would seem to be the best solution(make darn sure you position the cleat correctly the 1st-& only time!). that stuff will hold alot more weight than the surrounding GB will....and when you factor in the width of the cleat(thinking you'd max that) the psi falls to near nothing. heavier framing??then use wider cleat
