We had In Line Ovals make a fan case that is 53 X 33 X 5 1/2 deep. It is made of MDF and is beautiful.

Problem is hanging the darn thing because of the size (BIG), shape (FAN) and the wall thickness and material (3/4 MDF). I've considered Z Bar, Wall Buddies, and have (I think) settled on using 4 strap hangers positioned with 2 near the top and 2 near the bottom with the wire running through them so that the stress will be divided (although probably not evenly) amongst the four. Planning on using 2" screws for the strap hangers.

Tough to think real straight this time of year, so I'm wondering: does this sound reasonable?? I did a search on multi-point hanging but didn't find anything helpful in this case.

Any better solutions out there??

Thanks!

Is there a way for you to position WallBuddies in the upper "corners" of the frame? Or what about keyhole hangers? Or this could be a job for Jim Miller's secret mending plate security hangers.
 Rick

No corners

No upper corners Rick, just a big arc.

I'm concerned about a keyhole because of the wall thickness and material.

Also thought about a backing board but hate to add to the weight and we still have the problem of adhering the board to the MDF and stress on the board.

Doug, I think you have it figured out... you just forgot to wow us with the photo...

53", I'm guessing Japanese Fighting Fan?

I'm thinking the 2" screws are a little overkill... but what the hey, you've got the room; what's a little Overkill among friends.;)

a P E R F E C T opportunity for some genius out there to excercise his/her talents and design/get into production(in china, probably?)/& make $100's(sorry, not that BIG a demand?) by figuring out a GREAT way to do this kind of thing(& I'm betting the results weren't all that satisfactory, fight?)...also lends itself to ovals/rounds which have the same inherent problem--hanging something from a curved frame w/o splitting the frame, warping the frame from the pressure, breaking the fram from the pressure, etc etc.........

what else you gonna do in JAN/FEB????? we'll all applaud and buy the product!

B.F.F.

Thanks for the reassurance Baer. I just get nervous when Big and MDF are used to describe a frame.

Don't know about a fighting fan other than we're fighting to get it done by tomorrow. Did they actually use fans in fights? Will try to get a photo when done.

Bill, how about if everyone had metal in their walls and we could just sink some rare-earth magnets in the back of the frame. Unlimited positioning with no holes, no hangers, no wire angle concerns.

Doug, many years ago I framed a 300 year old Samari Fighting Fan. The "paper" was made from silk that had been in a Samari's family's clothing... cut up and made into paper. I guess at one point it had been very durable. . . . but age. . .

It was for my sensi who was giving it to his father-in-law who was his sensi and master.

Waiting for the pictures.

tiny tiny pictures... but man, with my big mag glass.... SWEET frame on a SWEET fan I'd kill for.
Nice nice very nice job.
