Customer brought in plates (heavy! weighs at least 5 to 10 pounds) that she wants to hang on the wall. Doesn't want hangers to show. Any suggestions?

How are you going to hang any plate without showing the hangers gripping the edge? Some might suggest epoxy or something for the back but why risk that for what little profit you could possibly make on this.

Walk away or advise her on the best safe way to do it.

A shelf? I know it would show, but that heavy of a plate either needs to be framed or put on a shelf. I don't think I would trust the plate hangers which also would show.

Is there any value to the plates or are they purely decorative? How big are they?

That probably means she expects you to glue hangers to the back of it. Nope. No way. Not a chance. Forget that.

My suggestion would be to construct a custom formed-rod hanging system. Get some lengths of .032" diameter (or whatever is appropriate) spring steel rod (piano wire) and bend it to fit the contours of the back of the plate. Cris-cross the rods across the back of the plate and include at least two hanging points. Extend 6 or 8 or more rod "fingers" to the edges of the plate and wrap them snugly over it for secure support.

Put shrink tubing on the sections of rod that contact the plate. Where the shrink wrap is visible, paint it to match the plate. The rods laced across the back of the plate may be securely attached by wrapping their intersections neatly and tightly with small-diameter stainless steel wire, which could be untwisted from #2 or #4 stainless steel picture hanging wire. Or, you could wrap the joints with copper wire and seal the wraps with solder. That makes a more secure assembly, but the solder is ugly, unless you paint it.

I've made a few of these, and it is time-consuming work. It does, however, provide a sturdy, custom-fitted hanging system. My prices for these formed rod hangers start around $150.00.
