Have a customer looking for a frame to hide a handgun behind. says he saw one that has space behind to fit a handgun. any ideas? thought if nothing else i would look around vegas in a few weeks.

Any deep shadow box will do, frame a signed photos of Sarah Palin right up to the glass, and save all the extra space for a gun in back

Yea, but that creates too much conflict!

Do I...

Shoot the intruder...

or...

Shoot the picture...

shoot the intruder...shoot the picture...shoot the intruder! Shoot the picture! AUGGGHHHHH!!!! BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM!!!!!!

The obvious solution would be to use a frame deep enough to accommodate the thickness of the handgun, and place it behind a thin item, such as a paper or fabric print. However, an observant thief might spot the too-deep frame.

A more effective design might involve framing a three-dimensional object, such as a music box or jewelry box, ostensibly to display a pretty design on its lid. But remove the back of the box and place the gun in it from behind.

In any case, a few rare-earth magnets could hold the gun in its hidden nest, and enable its removal from behind without delay or effort.

Or what if the gun were held to the wall with appropriate mounts, and the recessed-box frame hung in front of it strategically. This way the frame could just be removed, and the gun would be right there at the ready.
 Rick

P.S. Maybe the frame could be attached to the wall with hidden hinges at the top, so it would just need to be flipped up to access the wall-mounted gun. Might be a little quicker in a situation where every second counts.

One would also have to bear in mind that a lot of children get themselves killed and maimed by accessing handguns - so some sort of safety would have to be incorporated into this design.

I like that idea but I do wonder...what kind of effect will the magnets have on a firearm that someone still wants to use? Even small magnets have a lot of pull and would magnetize the part of the firearm it comes in contact with. I wonder if this could have a negative effect on any of the smaller moving parts inside (or even any chambered rounds, depending on their composition).

I'd try to recess the whole thing in the wall so it appears as a normal frame on the wall. Hinge it for access, I'd have to work our the details but sounds fun.

Not the same, but I did something like this recently for myself....not a handgun though.
We have a intercom system in our house, which we rarely use. The 'main' box is right in our living room and black and old and hideous.
I build a box around it and hinged a painting on top of the box.

I would recess the gun into the wall and hang a normal painting over it. Might not even need hinges if it's recessed enough into the wall. (unlike our intercom)

Yes, handgun safety is always a consideration. Education and awareness are the best strategies to avoid accidents involving guns, as well as to avoid accidents by all other causes. Have you noticed that legitimate gun enthusiasts universally favor firearm education and safety?

Not to frankenthread, but actually there are very few children killed or maimed by handgun accidents. For example, in 1999 there were 3,385 children killed by handguns, but only 214 of those deaths were accidental. The largest number were homicides, possibly gang-related teens. The second largest number were suicides, almost certainly involving emotional problems unrelated to guns.

Unfortunately, there could never be enough efforts toward handgun safety to eliminate all accidents, and that might have little effect on the suicide and homicide rates among children. When a person wants to kill himself or someone else, he would probably find some other way to do it in the absence of a gun.

I was just thinking about handguns killing children because some Grumbler recently had a terrible story to share about a tragedy in their hometown.

Has anyone noticed that now all of the posts are in ITALICS?

I like Cwiser's idea. Let us know what you come up with.

Someone else would have to do installation. Not about to cut thru someone's wall. Nope!

We have had about a half dozen children's deaths over guns in the past ten years. All have been accidents, and all have been because of irresponsible gun owners who failed to secure these weapons properly.

I'm not talking about the 17 yo street thug. I'm talking about children that wanted to impress their friends.

I notice the italics also every now and then. No big deal.
