-----Original message:
Hey everyone it’s time for the grumblers framing design contest!!!
 I was told to start the competition here because there is more traffic here...
Anyway, It’s a design contest because we are only judging pictures of the finish projects…. So here’s how it’s going to work… You all will send me your photos, I will take responsibility of all the pictures; I’ve had some generous offers of collecting the pictures but I have plenty of room to do it myself and I think it will get confusing if too many of us are collecting and posting… so I will just do it unless there are too many!

Details:
There will be plenty of categories for you to enter in and win; here are seven categories in which you can enter:
(1) Objects/Shadowboxes
(2) Art/prints on Canvas
(3) Decorator Prints
(4) Limited Editions
(5) needlework/textiles
(6) collages
(7) other /weird stuff not mentioned

In the case that there are fewer than five entries for some of the categories I will do a combination: 1 and 6 will be combined, 3 and 4 will be combined, and 2, and 7 will be combined… unless later decided other combinations would be better.
Please do not frame new things for this contest, feel free to use stuff you've already framed!

Details:
• Send the photos to me, but if a lot of people are entering I will make an announcement to start sending pictures to Jay and then to Deb (the two sweeties who volunteered to take photos!)
• The actual voting will begin on ***********changed**************• All the pictures and details will slowly be posted in the design section of the Grumble beginning on June 15th, and then a poll will be posted to let you select your favorite designs in each category next morning…. I think this will be sufficient for judging… I heard this once: “the most popular art is good art”, that probably goes for framing too.

Here’s the rules:
• Only two different projects submitted from each person… regardless of how many accounts you have!!!
• All entries from a single person must be from a different category
• You may send up to 3 pictures of each entree
• I must receive all pictures posted in a private message (preferred) or in an attachment by email from now until June 30th, 2005.
• I will be the only person who sees who you are and will not tell anyone!!
• Do not identify yourself as the owner of any pieces entered in an anyway: no hints in the pictures, no hints on the threads, no messaging of any kind!!!! We do not want this to be a popularity contest!! The owners of the pieces will only be announced after the voting has ended.
• Please be kind… do not send huge files to my email!! I have high-speed internet, but if a lot of you are entering, my email space will be low.
• You must have been the person who framed the items… no Larson wall samples!!!!!
• Include the details of the framed item to be posted with the picture, follow this format:
1) Frame used:
2) Matting used:
3) Description of item framed:
4) Description of framing design
5) other comments you would like to share about the project (like items used, techniques used)

If you have any questions what so ever please ask them here on this thread before you enter anything!!!

This is to have fun, show off your framing designs and to compete for fun!!!!

I have a program on my computer that allows me to make awesome certificates for the winners, so first place winners you’ll have something to frame on your wall for customers to see!!!

Have fun grumblers and get those pictures to me!! ;)

Send them to: pearsonj@fidnet.com

Wow, you are not kidding, Angie! I always loved and supported such events. If allowed, I'd contribute to this contest with 70 hand made photo frames by American Choice, ten for the winner of each categorie.

Cornel's frames are true prizes! A few years back, he offered the same type prize and I was one of the lucky winners. These frames are real beauties. Thanks for contributing again Cornel!

Hello all... just trying to keep this thread alive since it doesn't require much interaction....

Cornel, I was just wondering if you would mind posting a picture of the frames you offered for prizes??
He didn't tell you all this but those frames are worth $100.00 a piece!!! This is going to be a really good prize!!! I'll take the photos till June 15th. Have a good Day!

Angie
PS: can someone post the directions on how to post pictures again??

1. That would be a form of hidden advertising and I don't think it appropriate, Angie.

2. I'd say that a good idea like yours may very well dry out without strong leadership, sponsorship and public enthusiasm. Sadly, so far the real leaders of this forum kept their silence and distance followed by the rest of us. Personally I'd be very happy to see and support a design competition taking place on TG. My enthusiasm in this respect is age and rank blind, but that's only me. In real life there are things like gravitation, for which reason only our dreams fly weightlessly.

Gee Cornel, if there happened to be a page on your wonderfull web-site that was titled Grumble...

I don't think anyone could complain... :D

Great job on follow through Angie! You are a go-getter for sure.

Maybe you could get one of the moderators to "tag" this post so it stays on the top.....just to keep it in everybody's minds anyway. Especially since Cornel has made such a generous offer for prizes, that certainly will encourage participation. Just a thought.

oh that would be so nice... this one needs to stay at the top till all the pic's are collected... I don't know how I'm going to do that without typing to my self every day.

Also... I know it was short notice... what do you all think about extending the entry date? I've had a few people tell me they have too much going on to take pics/dig pics out or send me their pic's and I've also had a couple people want to enter things that have already been shown on the grumble... I was really concerned this would become a popularity contest if we did this, but I know it can be hard to come up with those amazing projects if they are already gone!!! Do you think it would become a popularity contest or do you think we grumblers would be more professional about it in our judging??

Hey, I thought it was okay to send previously posted examples. I won't be able to play otherwise. The picures are long gone from the G and have been for a couple years.

If you are getting all this sponsorship Angie, take the time to relook at the time frame and the rules, nothing wrong with that.

Honestly, if real prizes are on the line your biggest battle is going to be to control the votes. I realized that when I had a poll for the worst joke contest. Waaaaaay too many people have several log in names. Didn't make a bit if dif on a silly poll but if this is for real it wouldn't be fair if someone could vote more than once. Too bad you can vote as a brand new member, there should be a waiting period. You remember the rash of new members with your poll don't you Angie? Again, that was fun and games, who cares, but this is the real deal.....

I swear I am not looking for a grassy knoll.

United Mfrs. will give the winner of each category of the competition a $50.00 United Mfrs. Gift Certificate good towards any items in our catalog.
I believe this competition is great idea and should bring out the best the Grumblers have to offer.
Good luck to all competitors.
Peter Ackerman

Just bringing this back up to the top - I am becoming increasingly interested in entering this competition!!!

Gonna work on my entry tomorrow!

yeah!!!!! I'm going to make some amendments tomorrow considering all the unexpected sponsership of this event!!... I think we are going to push back the entry date and allow previous shown work on the grumble.... after all... someone who's been very helpful to me brought to my attention that being penalized for not knowing their picture was going to be disqualified from a future competition when they posted it so long ago is kind of silly. I Will work out the details tomorrow!! All inputs are welcome... this is your competition not mine!!! I just didn't want to wait any longer for someone else to do it! What do you all think about pushing the date for entries to be accepted till June 30th?

No offence, Angie - I think you have been reading Baer's posts for too long now - I think you mean "entries will be ACCEPTED" not "excepted" - two different things entirely!!! LOL!

here are a couple of my thoughts on the subject.....

If you have two people offering prizes you could have a first and second prize in each category.

I suggested to Angie that asking people not entering to be judges. That way there would be no ballot stuffing. We have some top notch framers on staff here that would make excellent judges.

If Baer is entering combine a couple other categories together like #3 and #4 and create a seperate category for Baer. He can post his examples in his category and win a prize. That way he won't sweep every category and there will be a chance for the rest of us.

I like the extended deadline to the end of June, it gives people time to work on a project if they have nothing to enter. If this is going to be a serious contest, which apparently it is, we want plenty of time allowed so all can participate.

That is all for now!

Guys,

You are burning with good intentions, for which reason I applaud and support you fully. But, if you care for my suggestion, I'd say that you need to ask a few old TG leaders for their input and fine tunings. Your enthusiasm is good, but their experience and charisma would make the difference between a competition with just a few participants and all that many winners, and a possibly memorable event for the history of The Grumble.
The Framer who was able to build and run such a successful forum like ours must have many answers to your whats, whens and hows. Ask him. Ask Ron, Jim Miller, John Ranes, Nona, Bob Carter and JBR, ask all the moderators for their ideas and support. I’m certain they would help. Why reinvent the wheel? Time is running and you don’t want to repeatedly extend the terms of this competition for one reason or another. Brainstorming and a vigorous shake up call is all it takes at this point. And, frankly, this contest is too large a task for just the shoulders of one brave lady. She can use some help too.

Well dog gone it Cornel, I am trying to offer some advice on voting/judging so you aren't givng your beautiful handcrafted frames away to the people who could vote for themselves 10 times over. If you want a fair contest you cannot use the voting booth.

The list of names Cornel just mentioned would make fine judges if they so choose to accept.

Okay Cornel, I just emailed all the names you mentioned with the exception of Bob since he will be unavailable for the next month. I asked them for ideas on promoting it and I also asked them if any of them would like to judge the event. Hopefully we will hear back with some great ideas.....

If Mark Klostermeyer would be willing to stop lurking, :D maybe he would be willing to judge.

He takes judging very seriously, and he would be one of my prime people to ask...IMHO.

(For those who don't know him, he's the current President of the PPFA.)

I would think that all those listed above, would want to enter. Just a thought.

Or, here's a better thought: If you know that you are not wanting to enter... and are willing to be part of the judging panel, please notify Angie.

That way, we don't know who entered, and we don't know who the judges are/were.

I'll take care of lining up the judges Baer, so Angie doesn't have to do everything. If you want to judge email me at emibub12@cs.com

Mark Klostermeyer would be a great addition. I don't have his email address or I would contact him too.

Sorry Angie, I don't mean to take over, just trying to make some "noise". I'm good at that.

Thank you very much Kathy for your concern!

If we are going to do judges I would still like to do a popular choice in the poll section for fun. Can the judges please message me?? I really appreciate all the help from all of you... I would also like to say that I certainly don't mind doing the work for this... after all I am here all by myself every night with absolutely nothing to do but play here on the grumble.... I enjoy it and it keeps my mind off the fact that my husband is not here :(

If I may say... there is some help needed though... what we really need is some recruiters for competitors!! I personally encourage all to enter the competition.... though I would like to myself, I think it would be wrong for someone who is trying to run the thing to do so.... so any grumblers... New or old please enter your framing design projects... for newbies-this is a way for you to introduce yourself with a bang!!

NOW FOR THE NOTICE:
Please bare with me since this is the first time I have attempted to do a competition online!!! This will be a ginny pig for next year!

*...due to the sponsership of the contest some slight amendments will be made:

*Because of the numerous amount of people who would like to enter projects that have been posted before, it will be permitted that photos which have been previously posted on the grumble can be entered for the current competition... with the exception that they are carefully reviewed.
*another amendment, due to more time being needed... is that the last date for accepting photos has also been moved to June 30th.
*For more fairness, since prizes of monetary value have been offered, Judges will be used instead of the polling system. However, there will still be polling to vote for popular choice. The winners of this vote will recieve a very nice certificate!

Okay... Now
I really don't think any more changes should be made since our very generous sponsers offered prizes under the previous terms... from here on out I think it's best to put it on the "what we should do next year" list.

I will start it for you...
I think Next year...
*we should have a volunteer staff in charge of different categories like recruiting, judging, picture posting...

Best of luck to the competitors!!! I will check back with you all tomorrow night!
Angie

Let me be the first to say, you're doing an heroic job. (all of the "youth and exuberance" joking asside. Kid. :D )

I think I can speak for a few of us, by saying Thank you for thinking, and following through with this idea.
thumbsup.gif

Yikes, I think I stepped on Angie's toes. Sometimes I can be so bossy, I could give Ellen a run for her money. I was just trying to help keep the momentum Angie! Of course the judges would be referred to you, I was just getting the ball rolling.

I was at a PPFA board meeting tonight and we were discussing our upcoming competition and certification class and I thought where the h ell are my priorities? I should have sent emails to all those fine people and ask if they wanted to judge our event.......

I defer to you madam, the ball is now in your court! *she exits gracefully, tripping on the way out of course as Grace was never one of the words used to describe her*
thumbsup.gif

What a great idea!

If there's anything I can donate, from a technical standpoint, let me know. (a website to host the entries for public viewing, converting them all to the same size, security audit to verify no one is cheating with fake accounts, etc)

Once the details are finalized, I suggest posting in the design forum, with a link to the main thread. Posting in the calendar is a good idea too, as many people use it.

I suggest submitting the top 3 winners to the trade magazines, with high resolution pictures and a small story announcing the winners and the generous sponsors. Magazines are often looking for small articles to fill space, and it would honor the winners as well as bring more folks to the grumble. If so, some small print on the entry form should make mention that they must permit their image to be posted on the web and possibly in print.

Just some random ideas.

Keep up the great work!

Gee Mike, those sound like incentives in themselves. Yes, Angie, you are doing a great job--"you go, girl." I don't know if I will enter or not at this point, but I would be more than willing to be a judge if that's the route you choose to go.

Just an update......I hooked some big ones...Jim Miller, Mark Klostermeyer have agreed to judge. I had John Raines on the hook but then he got away when he realized the date had been extended, I've still got the hook baited, he may be in, I am not sure.......

I told them all that Angie would contact them with details if she chooses to run the contest that way. If not, I sincerely apologize for wasting all their time.

Carry on Angie, you are doing a great job.

Mike on the popular choice thing your talents could be immeasurable towards stopping ballot box stuffing, and releave Kathy's fears. You could use the same format that a poll has and once someone voted they wouldn't be allowed to vote again.( I don't know if that is what you just said .LOL) But It is all I have to offer, along with the fact that popular choice is always included in PPFA competitions since the Jurried competitions are more technical merit and that won't be able to be seen here . This seems to be all esthetics and that is more of what popular choice balloting is about( do you like what you SEE).So I completely agree with Angie's position as we all should since she has worked so hard to bring this about, regaurdless of what the rules will be
,Thanks Angie.
BUDDY

...and he is back in.....John is up to the challenge too! Yeah! How nice of them to want to participate, I hope you take advantage of their generosity Angie!

Great job Kathy!!!!! Somebody give this woman applause!!!! I would definately like to take them up .... but I can't get in touch with them right away, I have to be gone until sunday(decided to go to poplar Bluff tonight to find a place to live). Since you have been so kind to get them would you mind letting them know that I will be in touch with them probably late Sunday night or on Monday and we can discuss the details!!!
Also, I think Mike has some great ideas!! I've gotta go now, I didn't realize I had so much to do!!! Sorry I can't talk more today!!
Angie

Just read this whole thread. Great ideas. Kathy's idea of having judges who are experienced framers is excellent.

Angie's wanting the judges to confer with her is the only way to go. Thanks to Peter and Cornel for their generous contributions!

So...when will the entries start being posted? I can't wait!

Hey all! I'm back and luckily I've found a beautiful place to live in Poplar Bluff!!
I'm still exhausted from all the driving and running around...
sleep.gif
wooh!

Anyway, the plans are to post the entries by the night of June 30th. I'll keep you posted with more details as the month progresses!!
Mark, Jim, and John... you all are wonderful for agreeing to judge!!! As soon as I find your information I will contact you right away!!

NEWS FLASH!!!!
thumbsup.gif

Okay...if this competition is going to work, we need some more competitors! On the double!! So far I only have 6 for sure in various categories... none of them are in the canvas category... a category which I know may be hard for people to come up with "different" design ideas for.. but I think this category in particular would be great to show any ideas of what you can do besides just a plain old frame everytime!

...and although there are grumblers who said they were going to compete but haven't sent there entries yet, I just want to let you all know that there is a good chance right now for you to win!!
Come on share your talent! Enter those great designs! Remember you can enter up to two! I know you've got'm! ;)

Angie

You grumblers just wait, I've said it to a few and I'll say it again... this is going to be idea heaven for EVERYONE!!!!!! I can't wait to show the entries to you!!

Also, I would like to thank everyone who has entered, the judges, the helpers, and the SUPPORTERS who have agreed to donate lovely prizes to the winners!!

I'll keep you posted!
Angie

PS:
thumbsup.gif
KEEP THEM COMING!!!! SHARE THOSE WONDERFUL IDEAS!!! YOU STILL HAVE A GOOD CHANCE TO WIN! THERE ARE SEVEN CATEGORIES WITH ONLY 10 ENTRIES FOR ALL OF THEM SO FAR!

Hey Angie,
How about an update?

How are the entries going so far and how much time is left to send the entries in to you?

Hey everyone!!! I've been out for a week. My boss is in Germany and I've been running the shop and we have been swamped since she left!... besides that my hubby's been home, so I've been spending some much needed time with him ;) But, I'm back now and anxious to work on this competition
...after I go through my emails I will post an update tonight and reply to those who have sent in entries. From what I can tell there has been several new entries, so I think since there is only ten days away before I post the pictures I am going to go through and get everything in the categories and start communicating more with the judges. I've got a lot of emails to go through so I'll see you tonight!
Angie

i would like to say that i have come across the grumble during a very tumultuous time in my life, i am moving across the country away from the town i grew up in, my career has been in a downward spiral working in poorly run corporate conditions where i have been expected to be a robot framer. this site and this competition have reminded me why i have stuck with this lousy job for the last decade! i can't wait to see all the submissions and become inspired all over again!!!!!
