The chat room will be down for several hours today, due to a large scale denial of service attack from overseas. Thousands of sessions are attacking the server simultaneously with various methods, slowing it down to a crawl.

We have taken it offline, and are installing some patches and firewall changes. We hope to have it back later this afternoon

Actually, the server hosts hundreds of different chat rooms for forums like this one. There are usually over 1000 chatters on the server. It's a free service for webmasters, supported by banner ads. It could have been from any one of the sites that use our chat room service, or just a random attack.

I'm one of the network administrators for the chat server.

We seem to be holding off the attacks for now, but haven't enabled the ability to log in yet. Probably within an hour or two.

We're back, after 6 hours of repairs and rebuilding the servers.
