Just got a new VN2+1 underpinner, and I want to build a stand to mount it vertical with a support table for larger moulding. I know you can buy that set up, but of course that is to expensive.
So has anyone come up with a good plan and built their own? Would be interested in any ideas you have, even if other than the vertical stand. Thanks

The VN2+1 underpinner is really not designed for tilting or working in a “vertical” configuration. The VN4 series is. The reason for this is that the nail position on the machine is fixed and you need to slide the moulding and fence back and forth over the nail head to the correct position. When the machine is tilted the moulding rests against the sliding fence and wants to slide to the end of the travel. The fence does not clamp until the foot pedal is depressed to the first halfway position of the foot pedal. Also with the VN2+1 you often have to move the hold down clamp to a different position when you move to the second, third or fourth nail position and this would be a pain to do while holding the moulding in place with one hand and adjusting the hold down clamp with the other.

This machine works best flat, built in to the corner of a table or on a separate stand that can be moved up level to your large worktable.

I have a VN4 and I bought the stand that goes with it. The mounting on the stand pivots. I keep the thing pivoted to about a 45 degree angle. I do this because it is more comfortable for me. It maybe possible that the stand will also work with your machine. I would ask the AMP people first. If you are going to Atlanta next month, AMP will have a large number of machines there with people that are very knowledgeable with the products.

Thanks Alan, all of that makes sense. But then I wonder why the rep. from Miter Mite showed me, and tried to sell me the floor stand with the unit tilted on it with a plywood backboard. I spoke with this rep. at TC's Spring Break in Troy, and then again at the M&M booth at the East Coast show in Philly a few months ago.

Just thinking outloud. Would the unit work with out the aboved mentioned problems if the back of the machine was mounted closest to floor, so that the hold down clamp was at the top. Maybe that is how the rep was showing it, can't remember for sure.

I've had my VN2+1 mounted on their metal swivel stand for several years. It's tilted upwards on a slight slope (30 degrees??) due to space considerations and it works fine. The guage is at the bottom and the moveable clamp (activated by the toe) is toward the top.

The felt padded top clamp usually stays in the same position for most mouldings--I don't have to adjust it too often.

It's OK working slanted upwards and the stand is high quality, but I wish I had the space as Alan mentioned and I could build my VN2+1 underpinner into a large horizontal work table.

It's a great machine and you'll love working with it.

I have my VN2+1 mounted on an old heavy-duty metal typewriter stand. The stand has a pedal that raises it up to engage wheels or lowers it down to rest solidly on the floor. This way, I can wheel the machine into a different position if needed to accommodate extremely large frames that would be blocked by other shop fixtures with the machine in its usual position. This has worked out great. You can probably get a stand like this pretty inexpensively at a used office furniture outlet.

j paul: You remember it correctly, the VN2+1 was mounted but the angle of degree was much less than 30 degrees. The gentleman from AMP was Jim Charters and he can be reached at 1-800-322-4204 and he may be able to give you some guidence.

About 1/2 of our customers use it right side up (air adjuster to the back) and about 1/2 use it up side down (air adjuster to the front). If you are going to tilt it, I would suggest mounting it up side down. Remember you will have to leave plenty of room behind the machine (away from you) so your longest legs do not hit anything.
