hi all,
i am involved in trying to find a deadbeat client who left town oweing me over $5000, and have sought the help of many, including the National Association of the Self-Employeed, of which I am a member. They advised me to go to a collections agency, and they have one the recommend. They do not take 50% of the awarded money, and I think this is unusal in that biz.
their website is www.ncsplus.com. While I haven't actually used the service yet, but I plan to and think they have a good, honest rep.
Hopefully no one ever has to use this, but, better to be prepared with options!
:)

ok, i take that back..
i called them, and they do charge a flat fee and not 50% of your money recovered, but their fee is like $925!!!! so, it's not a huge bargin, unless you've got 25 people to find, and debts that largely outweigh the cost. the $925 intitles you to them aggressively finding and reporting 20 deatbeats..

i suppose that $925 is better than payng $2500, but with this company, you pay them upfront, and you may not get your money. with other collection agencies, you pay them 50%, but only if you collect, so, which is better?!??
who knows.
i hate this guy for ruining my framing innocence.

I would be a little concerned about up front money. What is the incentive for them to go after the deadbeat?

I have seldom been hounded by collection agencies, but the few times I have, I have just blown them off since the amount were small and I thought I had good reason not to pay. It might be different with amounts like you are stuck with, but even with the larger potential amount, I would probably agree to the 50%.

Did you see the news report on King tv about the woman in Olympia who got the haircut, didn't like it and refused to pay and left the store. The owner of the store contacted the police and filed a theft report! The prosecuting attorneys office says of the thousands of theft reports they get each year they have never had to prosecute for a haircut!

But it got me to thinking, next time I am not paid for merchandise that has left the store I might try the theft report approach. I know I sure would not want something like that against my name....

hummmm.. interesting Lynn. very interesting.
i hadn't thought of that. i was thinking the police wouldn't want to pursue something like this, but maybe it's just about what goes on the guys record..

and, i think the $925 is a lot up front money. that's true, what is their incentive then to go after him? they've got their money.. i bet they just call you up a few times and say, "we're trying as hard as we can and we just can't find him! oh well! we'll keep trying for another $925!"
we'll see what happens.. i can't afford to be out this money, and he probably knows that. people said he burned some other businesses in the skippin' town process.. maybe i could file a joint report with them?
any ideas?

If I recall from previous posts you still have the frame that is in question don't you? If so he really did not steal anything from yousince he does not have the product. It will be hard to collect anything for the same reason.

My advice, find a better collection agency and remember that you can really only go after him for product that he has received unless you had a specific written agreement, and even those will not hold up many times.
