Customer brought in two small ( 16 x 20 ) Closed Corner Gold Leaf frames that have been damaged in a move. The most damaged part has a small chip of about 1/2" out of the compo. The rest are places where the leaf is rubbed off. The question is can this be repaired or does the whole frame need re-leafing? Of course the canvas fitting needs to be redone to todays standards as there is NO backing board, NO barrier tape and NO cushion between the lip and the canvas. The sad thing is that the art and framing or only 1-2 years old and are valued at $10,000+ each. We don't let the cheap China art go out that poorly framed.

Your best bet is to ask one of the companies that make such frames. I'd call CDNV and AMCI (both in NY) and see what they say.

Without seeing the extent of the damage, I believe re-leafing only the affected areas is possible, because either one should be able to match the current color of the gold leaf.

AMCI rep for CT area is Andy Povill (very nice guy) his cell number is: (516) 474 3427

CDNV: 800 491 1041

Good luck!

Most leafers ought to be able to fix the missing bit of compo and the leaf, without re-doing the whole thing. I've seen it done many times, so if somebody tells you it can't be done that way, go elsewhere.

Not sure. Can you "glaze/tone" over gilders past?

I don't want it to look like a patch job but price is a factor. It wouldn't be the first time someone bought art worth thousands and won't spend hundreds to make it look fantastic.

I've never done it but the folks at Baroque Art are very responsive and helpful and are always trying new things to do with their product.

Could you post a picture of the damaged area? There are a number of gilders who hang out here who could (well, are almost guaranteed to) give an opinion.
