I am rapidly running out of my current stock of gold ink from Mat Magic, and am looking for a replacement product. I have tried Winsor & Newton but find that it dries too fast and clogs the nib. Any suggestions from those that do metallic pen lines on matting?

Wally, you might try Speedball Pigmented Acrylic Ink. It flows very nicely, but I have found that if you make a mistake it is not easy to remove. I find that it does not just sit on top of the mat surface, but it penetrates it a bit. (It does not bleed out to the sides.)

The nice thing about the ink is that it does sit up tall on top of the mat, so that it helps make a little well for doing watercolor bands between the ink lines.

I haven't tried this yet, but it looked interesting. Joann Fabrics had 14K gold, silver and copper pens. They were $5.99 each. I didn't pick one up, but I do intend to go back and get one to try.

Thanks SueMay!

Wally- You didn't say what Winsor & Newton product you tried, but if it was an ink, try switching to Winsor & Newton GOACHE. A small dab out of the tube, thinned to the consistency of whole milk, is perfect for doing inklines. I find that it has a decent "open time", and doesn't clog the pen. The lines are very consistent in quality and, when dried, appear slightly raised from the surface like the lettering on an engraved invitation. small errors are easily corrected with an x-acto knife or sharp mat cutter blade.

The metallic goache colors (gold, silver, and bronze) seem to be non-stock items these days, so you may have to have them special-ordered by your art supply dealer. It's worth the effort, though, as I've never had luck with brands other than Winsor & Newton.

MatFramer, Those style pens typically have a porous fiber tip that doesn't provide a well defined line on the mat surface. What I use is an old split-nib ruling pen that I got off eBay along with a bunch of other drafting tools. These kinds of pens allow great control of the width and definition of the line.

Rick you are right W&N Gouache and ruling pen. I have been selling the W&N Gouache for over 26 years and use it on all the french matts. We do stock the gold & silver.

Dear Grumblers,

As we used to be the European distributor for MAT MAGIC, we still have a fair stock of most of the Mat Magic products: powders, paints and inks.

As the Mat Magic products are discontinued, we are willing to supply the American framers the items they need. Just send us an email with a list of the items & quantities you might need. We'll reply with an offer, including prices & shipment cost.

I hope we can help you with this.
