I have an inexpensive DSL connection, with a modem
that hooks into an outlet. I use my laptop, but not wirelessly
at home. I keep it plugged into the wall.

My portable phone gave up the ghost, so I use a landline
with a cord. What's weird is, if I'm online and I answer my
phone, it kicks me offline. Is this a usual experience for
people to have?

It shouldn't happen.

Does your phone have a DSL filter attached to it (which in trun is plugged into the outlet)?

If yes, then you should tell your phone / DSL company about this. If the DSL and the phone company are different entities (rare but ya never know), be prepared for a finger pointing match!

In 99% of cases, DSL and your voice line travel over the same pair of copper wires. The voice is at one frequency, and the DSL is at a higher frequency. You're supposed to put small filters at each jack, where phones plug in, to filter out the high frequency static. (it doesnt sound very good when on a call) The DSLMODEM plugs into a jack that doesn't have the filter.

Do you hear this from any of your phones?

To make your phones ring, the phone company sends an 88 volt surge out over those wires. That surge is knocking the fragile DSL signal offline. (Normally this isn't a problem)

It could be a sign of a poor ground for the wiring, and inbalanced line (out on the streets), or just a low signal. The phone company will fix this right up, and may switch you (on the street) to a different pair.

The laptop modem plugs into a jack in my bedroom, and
I do have a filter between the cord and the jack. My phone
is plugged into a jack out in the living room, but it has a long
cord, so I run it in and set it beside my bed. I do have a power
strip that plugs into the wall in my bedroom, and the modem power
is plugged into it. I've noticed that whenever this power strip is
on and I'm on the phone, there's a sort of hiss the whole time.
If I stay on the phone and unplug that power strip from the wall,
the hiss disappears instantly. But the phone is plugged in all the
way out in the living room.

Hmm......I'd better check that. It has a splitter thing,
and I thought that was enough. But come to think of
it, maybe it's not a filter, just a twofer. Thanks for all
the help, guys. I really appreciate it.

Wireless routers start at about $35 and good ones can be had for less than $50. That would get you off the cord.

I don't think it's any of that :) It's probably just a weak line from the phone company, and needs to be diagnosed by MA Bell and/or replaced with a new pair.
