On your main page, your meta tags are empty. When search engines try to find you, there are no descriptions or tags about who, what and where you are. Pull up your home page, and in the "View" menu on your browser, choose "Source". This is what I found on your page:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en" />
<meta name="description" content="" />
<meta name="keywords" content="" />

The Keyword and Content tags on our pages have the following information.

<meta name="keywords" content="Framers Loft, picture framing, custom, photo restoration, Hudson, Litchfield, New Hampshire, NH, Framer's Loft, Londonderry, Nashua, Framers' Loft, Windham, Frame Loft, Derry, CPF, certified picture framer, shadow box, fabric, needle craft, stretch, shrink wrap, needlepoint, cross stitch, dry mount, plaque, cross-stitch, picture frame, laminate, mat, matte, crewel, crewell, cruel, glazing, glass, acrylic, plexiglas, matting, canvas">
<meta name="description" content="The Framer’s Loft has been the leader in custom picture framing in southern New Hampshire since 1985, employing the first Certified Picture Framer in the state.">

If you Google “meta tags”, there are several tutorials on how and what to include.

Meta tags used to hold a greater deal of value, until about 5 years ago. Because of abuse, not so much any more. I'm not sure if any search engines still look at the keyword tags, but the description tag is still very important. It's still important to include them, and EACH PAGE within your site should have unique meta tags. If you use the same info for every page, there will be a results penalty.

The TITLE tag is absolutely HUGE. (important)

The word content within the page is highly important. Keyword and phrase density is big, and should cross reference somewhat to the TITLE of that particular page. Think of how people might be searching for your particular page, and "think backwards" to cleverly incorporate some of those phrases. Special attention is given to HEADERS.

It also considers the words in your domain, and in the names of your pages

Quality links that point to your site from other highly related sites have some weight, especially if there are keywords in the link itself.

Blogs currently have some weight, too. They represent fresh content, and search engines like to be current.

Longevity is looked at, as is when the domain expires. If it is more than 18 months or so, most feel that they hold the site in higher regard.

Images on the site should have alternate text which explains what that particular photo is about.

Google is generally the one to aim for, as they lead the pack in this game. If you are optimized for google, you'll probably do well on the others. They keep the (ever changing) secret formulas under secrecy, so it's a guessing game to know what works. I have had good luck with the above, however.

The above is purely my own opinion, after trial and error.

It's not rocket science...

Mike pretty much hit the key areas....Title (meta)...Description (meta) and Content. Along with some alt tags and Inbound links.

Let the links come naturally, and from truly related sites.... Most of the tips that work are real and make sense.

Take small steps and continuously update.

The only important area that Mike didn't touch on....was to keep the site designed for the Human Visitor...not just for the Search Engine Spiders. Otherwise, you won't keep your customers in the shop (I mean clients on your site.) ;)

The Almighty internet

The art and science of getting better page rankings (in Google because they are the heavyweights) is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). For anybody seriously interested about getting better search engine rankings, I would suggest doing a search on google for "Search Engine Optimization". I would start by reading the Wikipedia article.

It's a whole new world and will require lots of effort and time.

Good Luck!

Here are a few things that seems to worked for me and some others that I'm training myself to do on a regular basis (twitting/blogging).
  • Register and add you business information in Google Places. This might not have anything to do with SEO but this is the map the shows up on the top of the search results page with the list of companies next to it.
  • Name your pages properly. For example, I name my Jersey Framing page "sports_jersey_frames" so the URL becomes "http://arthausframing.com/index.php/services/sports_jersey_frames"
  • Have a different title for each one of your pages
  • Have a different description for each one of your pages and make it relevant to that page
  • Have a different set of keywords for each one of your pages and make it relevant to that page.
  • Have and submit an XML sitemap.
  • People on the internet tend to "browse" and not read so add beautiful photos of your work for the people browsing
  • Google and other web crawlers looks at your textual content so write for the crawlers but make sure it is also "human readable".
  • Mentioning your target cities/towns by name in your content helps a lot.
  • If you haven't yet, register and use Google analytics. There is a new free analytics site that seems promising but I have not used them yet (www.observerapp.com)
  • Social networking also contributes to your SEO. When you twit or add content to your Facebook, have a link that points back to your website.
  • If you can, add a blog to your site and write something on a regular basis.
  • If you post in forums, make sure, if the forum allows it, to add a signature line with a link to your site

Regards,
Troy

Mike,

I have to yield to your knowledge in such things "ethernetic" as SEO, and from what I’ve read, indeed meta tags are less important (yet not totally irrelevant) than they used to be.

However, on QuickArtFrame’s main page there seems to be very little (if any) text. It appears to be almost entirely graphics e.g. <img src="/images/site_imgs/img_main_01.jpg" … /></li>. The image itself or image location does not contain any useful information which could be use by Google.

Nor would the title, “<title>:: World Best Frame, Poster, Banners & Custom Printing Service - Quick Art Frame ::</title> “ provide any clue as to location.

Only in a sub-sub page (About Us) is there any mention of their physical store address.

Without meta tag descriptions or keywords, would a mailing address buried so deep in a site be sufficient for a search engine to find and index them?

How do I put one of you "specials" into the shopping cart. I see the $19.95 on your header, but can't find it any where else on the site to put it into the cart.

Very good suggestions in the previous posts that I won’t bother repeating.

In general the goal of Google is point people to the content they are looking for. In order to do this well Google spends a lot of resources doing two things:
1. Scanning your page to determine what the content is.
2. Scanning other web pages to determine the value of your content.

Google was the first to attempt to do #2 and they primarily do this by looking at inbound links to your site. If they scan your page and determine it is talking mostly about framing and then if lots of other pages talking about framing are linking to your website they assume that you are good source of framing content and you will move up in the search rankings for the relevant keywords.

For #1 you need to make sure your website is easy to understand and pages should have simple topics. Pick a topic for the page and stick with it. For example for a page about picture frames, the URL, the Headers, the meta tags, and the text should have the keyword picture frames so that when a google computer program (not a person) is looking at the page it is easy for the program to tell…oh this page must be about picture frames.

Next you need links to the page from the outside world. One easy way to get a good link is to have that link in your signature for all of your online posts in forums such as the grumble. Also create a blog. You can then do a blog post about picture frames and have it link to your picture frame page. I needed to pick an example phrase for this post, and so I picked picture frames because that is keyword that my site was dropping down a little on google. This post will help.

One critical item to keep in mind is that since there are thousands of picture framers in the country it will be hard to come up on page one of google for say “picture framing” but it is much less harder to come up for “picture framing Wichita” so be sure that google can easily tell where your location is and make sure you are listed in google maps and other map programs.

There are also various directories that you can get listed in for free or for pay. Are you a member of your local chamber of commerce and do they have an online directory of members? If they do make sure they link to your site. It will help bring in a few people, and Google will see the link assuming it is available for non members to see. BBB is another one. Online copies of your yellow pages is another…if you are in the paper phone book make sure you are in the online phone book.

You can also create a Facebook fan page. Fan pages are open to the public which means that google can see the content and links on a fan page. Fan pages are also great ways for your customers to refer you to their friends. One click of the like button and instantly all their friends see it.

Cheers,
Mark

Good evening picture framers,

I have a simple question to ask all of you

Any suggestions about making my website more relevant and getting people to come to it.

I love what I do and would like to share my work with the world. :D
