Can anyone suggest a company in the North East for French Mats? We want to expand our line, and are looking to pick up another vendor (we currently rely on Summit French Mats). Any advise is welcome!!!

I suggested that I do them. I've got minimal experience with just drawing lines on mats. I told my superior if I had some scrap mats to practice on, I could surely pick up how to do it. He wasn't too keen on that idea. Oh well. We'll see what happens with the suggestions.

Sharonm, I don't think the person who you spoke to about this is not all that superior at all, sounds more like an idiot to me.

My suggestion would be to go to another frame shop and ask them to sell you ten dollars worth of scrap mats, after you explain why you want them, they will probably throw in a few extra or even comp. you the whole pile.

Your approach is exactly how most of us learned, we bought a book, then practiced on scraps.

Learn this skill and as many more as you can, then tell your idiot, er "superior" to shove it, then open your own shop. The one thing you are learning from that person is how NOT to motivate employees.

Thank you for the input, John! I actually plan to own my own shop in the future. I'm working on all my skills as best I can, and when I move back to PA in a couple of years, I plan on opening my own shop. For years my Dad has been saying how good I'd be at it. I've also been learning a lot from the Grumblers in the short time I've been here (thanks everyone!!!). I just don't want to open a shop in NYC and close it 2 years later (or have to deal with selling it).
If if were up to me,though, I'd be my superior. I actually have experience at it. But that is another story

If you want to do wash and line designs, begin
hunting, in antique stores or among older relatives (who were draftsmen or engineers),
for the best ruling pen you can find. A great
pen turns ruling lines from a pain to a joy.
