Free Phone Calls....from Google!!!

Really free and right from inside Gmail!!!

Google Shakes It Up Again With Free Phone Calls

International cost a little though (2 cents per minute....:p), but US & Canada are free.

Umm, do you have to pay for a cell phone service? Do you have to pay for data service? Does the talking use up your megabytes forcing you to opt to an unlimited data pack?

It ain't free, just new and fun. VoIP is now VoWIP Voice over Wireless IP.

With this one can now use the IPAD to make free phone calls. IPad and IPhone in one almost! I guess one would need just the cheapest data plan and no phone plan anymore!!

You can also do this with Skype and some others.

We're going to Europe soon (vacation) and will be using the laptop to call back to the states, at 1.7cents per minute. If we call from the laptop to a droid phone (or to a pc) it's totally free.

I can see how this definitely would be a work around with the varying cell phone protocols around the world.

Yes the roaming fee is $2.50 per minute, for regular calls. I won't be doing that :)

The Gmail calling feature does not work on the iPhone or iPad, or Android for that matter. At least not yet. It only works on your computer and you must install the "Voice and Video Chat" plugin on to your browser for it to work. http://www.google.com/chat/voice/

(Skype works great on the iPad for calls.)

Google Voice and the new calling feature in Gmail are, or can be, related. If you don't use GV, you can make calls in Gmail and the caller ID will show a generic Google owned phone number. If you have a GV number connected with your Gmail account, the caller ID will show your GV number. If you have a GV number you can now have it ring through your Gmail mailbox and answer it on your computer or through any of the phones you forward your GV number to. GV is basically call forwarding and voicemail service.

Ever notice how internet-speak can make even an intelligent person sound goofy? :)

Can't wait until MS comes out with a BingPhone :) Don't want anything to do with it personally but can't wait to hear people talking about their new BingTones :)
