Hi.

The other day, I found myself wishing for a natural wood
frame with either softer lines or some sort of interesting
detail to it's shape. Maybe it doesn't work to do that with
things like maple, and whatever else they use for natural
and blonde frames, but I wish it would. It seems like when
I go to look for them, all I find are frames with straight
sides, and either a flat or rounded top. Nothing with any
sort of softness or interesting detail. I wish there were
something like that. Or maybe a fillet in that color with
some interesting details.

What else? I wish there were more blacks that were
between 1/2" and 1" deep that have a primitive look.
We have lots of blacks, in a great many shapes, but
there aren't many that look simple and primitive. I find
myself looking for black and seeing a whole lot of mattes,
with clean contemporary lines, but I wish for more that
looked beaten or like stone.

Don't know about the maple request, but some of the LJ cherry profiles have a sort of "camelback" shape with a soft curve, similar to those Ivy used to offer. (They made it in maple too.)

As to the primitive blacks, try some of the Nurre Caxton Palladios. They are a little softer than true black, and have a weathered, slightly distressed feel.

Thanks, Rick. I wrote a blurb in the original post about how
much I love the Palladios, then edited it out. I really do like
the way they have warm blacks, and also that profile with
the unevenly planed edges. I think it's also that I wish for
the primitive look and finish in more narrow blacks. Profiles
that are, oh, 3/4" to 1 1/4" wide.

Not just black, either. I'm thinking especially of stretched
paintings on canvas. I'm always happy with new frames
that are deep enough to hold these, and to allow for good
stacking or liner fillets, but that aren't great big and blocky.

Decor 9950 is another black similar to the one above. I can't remember the exact rabbet depth, but I want to say it's about 1/2". Also very inexpensive. I sold about 500 feet of it in a year and a half.

It sounds as if you need to sharpen your skills at creating your own frames and finishes instead of the standard fair. Really offer custom work, finishes. Don't give your time away if/when you go there. The learning curve can be as big as your imagination or simple finish tweeks on existing frames.

Zylo and Foster and others can give you any basic profile you wish to design in a wide range of woods. Bomar Designs has an amazing selection of classic compo pieces or you can design your own as well.

Here is the one item I would put on my Framing Wish List:

¼" x ¼" Econospace in black, clear and white.

I end up using gessoed wood strips which are a PITA. (Plus hard to paint them clear, doncha know!)

the time to frame something for myself

Garrett has some examples with a lip detail and others with a simple ogee reverse. They also have a very nice line of ebonized walnuts that have a bit of a deconstructed look.
For a primative black, try a simple oak or ash profile. Spray paint it with a gaudy flat red finish then use Liberon's pigmented dye to "ebonize" it. some careful sanding and waxing and you've got it.

Wish list...how about a few more paying customers. The charities are still going full bore, why can't the revenue enhancing folks keep up their end of the deal?
