Make up samples of all framing materials that you would use in a frame job and keep them by the front counter. For example I cut 8x10 pieces of 2 ply, 4 ply, 8 ply, 1/8 thick foam board, 3/16 thick foam board, Gator board, Coroplast, etc., poly quilt batting on foam board, and even a pre-stretched canvas. I marked them all neatly and included the retail price per sq. ft. to give them real value.
When you have to explain a proceedure to a customer you will have these "Sales Aids" clean and handy.
This will also help you remember to pick out a frame that has enough rabbet depth for the particular combination of materials. (Or quickly discard a frame that isn't deep enough).
Make a small (2x2 inch or so) gage made up of a piece of glass, 2 mats, and a piece of foam board (The most typical framing package in most shops) to test new mouldings for rabbet depth.
When the moulding salesmen keep getting their stuff rejected because of too shallow rabbets, the word just might get back to the moulding manufacturers. Ya think? Of course there's always our RabbetSpace for emergencies
