A museum client of mine brought in an accordion folded map mounted to linen
in four sections. The general condition is very good as it was kept in a book binder.

Three of the four quadrant sections measure 48" h x 35 1/2" w. The fourth section, which is the lower left quadrant has an "L" extension on the bottom left
which measures 25" x 8 1/2" making the overall measurement 48" X 44" in a backwards L-shape.

My game plan is to float mount the four sections on rag board with passover hinge strips and frame them in two separate frames. The upper two quadrants in one frame with the map butt registered to each other. The bottom two quadrants in the same manner and accommodating for the L-shape with an L-shaped floater board.

Within the second frame (with the L-shaped mount), I would be mylar strap- mounting the map binding book above the "L" shape of the lower left part of the map.

Confused yet???

The float mounted pieces would be then adhered to a fabric wrapped backer leaving a 2" border around the maps. I would build up the float mount a bit to make sure the map does not come in contact with the map.

In order to accommodate the depth of the mounted book binder I would need to use a deep moulding. Looking at using LJ #573IB which is a 4" deep shadow box moulding. Spacers, also fabric wrapped, would then complete the frame package with 1/4" Plexi. Optium is out of budget for this project. It will hang on two sides of a wide hallway with florescent lighting so I suggest UV guards for the florescent lights.

Size of one frame package will be 52" X 75".
The other one with the L-shape and book will be 52" X 83 1/2".

Here's where I could use some suggestions... What fabric wrappable substrate could I use to mount the floated map sections on that comes large enough and who might carry it? Second of all, what is your suggestion for a good Chicagoland area supplier for large enough 1/4" Plexi?

Thanks for all input.

Dave, check with SmallCorp on support boards. Go to Tru Vue's/Cyro's web site and you can find a distributor for the acrylic. The name of the business has changed but you should be able to get there.

Relax...it's not like they want this next week for the grand opening...or do they?

Wally... thanks for your response. No, not a tight time schedule... I told them two+ months.

I know of SmallCorp, but the freight has to be a killer in this size.

What substrate might work? I could use bonded boards ... 1/2 and 2/3rds, but it would make the box frame even deeper. Aluminum substrate? Have not used it but it could be a candidate?

Sounds like freight will be a big factor in this.

The last project I did for them was an eleven foot winter snow photo of Jerusalem from 1898. ... yes, it does occasionally snow in Jerusalem. Nice project and they loved the end sum.

The person who donated these items to the museum could easily write a check to the museum for a whole new museum building and probably will. He has many more donations that could be made (and hopefully, will) and a progression of these types of projects could be in the wings. So, yes, I am a bit excited. This is the work I love to do.

Sounds like an incredible project, Dave. All I can say is, I hope you are able to post pics when you're done!! Would love to see it.

My suggestion is go with 3/16 acrylic instead of 1/4. It costs a little less and has less weight. It will do the job. Also if you are interested in UV protection 3/16 OP3 is available in a 72 x 96 size so that you could get the cut you need.

For the fabric substrate what about a rag board mounted onto coroplast or gator?

I appreciate all the suggestions... haven't called for quotes because the curator emailed me and said they had a different idea about framing them than what we had discussed. Maybe doing each quadrant separately which would lighten my load somewhat. Waiting to hear back.

For the substrate I guess I could bond sections of rag board to coroplast board. If done carefully and bevel joined the seams may not show after wrapping. I'd also have to use sections of coroplast too unless I can find some larger than 4' X 8'. I'd much rather use an un-pieced together substrate though... Mm-mm...

Well... finally got the call today to go forward with the project. With the gold leaf name plates, UV glazing, photography work and all it comes out to about an 8K job. Really needed it this month because things dried up the last couple weeks.

Hugh was kind enough to consult with me. I'll be using Alumalite board as a substrate then polyflute board screwed and glued with PVA adhesive to attach the backer board to the Alumalite. The screws will be hidden under the map which will be hinged with top hinges and loose side hinges to the floater board.

Hugh said that I really could not depend on just the Lascaux adhesive to hold
and should have some physical support, thus the screws.

Had to end up going all the way to CA for the 3/16" OP3. Freight is a killer, but
is a pass through to the customer. If anyone has a closer source please let me know but I called pretty much all the suppliers in the midwest that I could find.

Thanks... called but they don't have it and would have to special order. Wasn't sure if he could get it either without checking.
