I have a customer who is interested in framing a set of bagpipes. She would like something that could be opened.. either from the front or back.. in case her husband has the urge to belt out a tune. I have never done anything like this before. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I think I would make sure the hinges squeeked so that if I heard the door open, I would have time to head for the outdoors!

Betty (And now back to your regularly scheduled "real" advice.)

An old musicians' joke:

Q: Why do bagpipe players walk while they play?
A: To get away from the noise!

Welcome the The Grumble, 4C!
I know there are a few old thread kicking around here that may address this. I'll get back to ya on that...

Welcome, as well, 4 corners.
I agree with the bagpipe opinions. Sounds like somebody strangling a sackfull of geese....

Fourcorners,

Have YOU ever heard of a town called Redwood Valley?

I like the bagpipes when played by someone who knows how. Personally, I've known exactly one person who knew how and lots more who thought they did.

SOMEONE will have some legitimate suggestions about how to frame them. We're just checking to make sure you have the patience to be a Grumbler.

I'm not sure it would be a good idea to frame a set of bagpipes that one wanted to keep in playable condition.

("Ah ha!", you say, suspecting your customer may have ulterior motives.)

The seals could dry out, the pipes crack, the bag split. Reynard, please feel free to jump in here with an expert opinion.

Kit - very fond of bagpipe music and intolerant of any suggestion that that phrase might be an oxymoron.

My sister lives across from a park where for years a gentleman has walked around playing his bagpipes. It actually sounds nice, but we are a safe distance away. The only reason we can think he uses the park is that maybe his family won't let him practice in the house. I don't have a clue how to frame them though. I was just adding to the testing patience thing, good luck!

Fourcorners,
I would try to build a shaped cavity in Foamcore or styrofoam covered with fabric for the mount itself. It would have to be snugly carved to hold the peice in place, Something simmaler to the packing around fine collectables. Place this in a back shadow box frame then use a face frame hinged to the front. I would use hidden hinges and a magnetic catch to make it look more framelike and less like a cupboard.
This treatment would not be archival. But it would function, from a design stand point.

Hope this will help.
