Hello All!
I 've spent an hour looking through the archives for some help on this. Most threads led off into a gazillion other directions! But it was a good read! Anyway, I've a customer that has a very old (early 1900's) ponytail she wants framed along with a photo of the ponytail owner. Any advice? I'm thinking a mylar envelope perhaps. I'm not sure I will like the way that will look but I can't think of anything else. Thanks for any help.

I did one of these a few years ago. LJ has some nice antique-reproduction frames that are about 1-1.5" deep. We tied the ponytail together with a nice ribbon, then stitched the ribbon to a piece of matboard that already had an opening cut into it for the photo. Held the ponytail in place nicely, but it was small. If the ponytail is larger I would suggest looping some fishing line around it in one or two spots to help hold it in place. Framed it as a shadowbox. Looked great and the customer was pleased.
Hope that helps

Hair is attractive to bugs, so the frame should be well sealed, to keep them away. Otherwise, good preservation materials and methods should do.

Steph and nancyg.....you guys see this? She doesn't have a problem framing hair!

Diane, you go girl!

Maybe I will frame my ponytail one of these days!

a pony tail or a ponytail

Is this a human's ponytail, or the tail of a pony?

In either case, ewwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Sounds a little scary to me too but that's just me...

I think 3D pieces look nice snuggled down into a sink mat or mount; shaped depression(s ) cut into foam board or layers of foamboard and then covered with a nice washed fabric. For very 3-D items you can use Ethafoam 220 (Dow)- it come in 2" thick planks, but they can thin it to whatever thickness you want, and you get the extra for futher jobs.

"Ponytail" again!

It is a human ponytail! What is so gross about that? At one time it was that woman's crowning glory, right? My problem is not with framing it, it's with how to mount it. It's already tied with a very old piece of ribbon, but it is about 16" long and very wavy. I'm afraid strands will become loose and fall to the bottom of the frame if I don't encapsulate it in some fashion. Tying it in a couple of places along it's length kind of looks un-natural to me. Any other ideas? Oh, and of course the customer doesn't want to spend alot of money!

Val........EEEEEEWWWWW!!!

I have to say I was more skeeved out by the last thread. I had a vision of wads of hair being pulled out of a shoebox......definitely not Victorian hair art in my mind!

Besides , when it comes right down to it, if it puts money int my bank account I could really care less....I don't keep latex gloves around for nothing!

I still say....GRO-TESQUE!

Well you could lay it down on backboard, cover it with nylon netting/tulle in the nearest color match you can get, stitch the edges of the tulle to the backboard, and then trim the netting.
